On a W Reg. Peugeot based Wentworth the engine doesn't stop when the "ignition" key is turned off; even when allowing the engine to cool down first.
The Fuel Cut-off solenoid switch has been changed which solved the problem for a few weeks but it then returned.
The mechanics have reported that "swarf" is preventing the contacts from closing ( opening ) but I don't really see how.

Any ideas?

on and off for the whole of my existance
bad news i am affraid

On this occasion I would like to be proved wrong, but, are you sitting down????

When this happened to a vehicle of mine, it was the diesel distributor pump breaking down inside - the cure being a new distributor pump.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

have to agree with upmarket hippy common problem on diesel fuel pumps
if your mechanics have found metal swarf (filings) when they removed the
fuel cut of solenoid.this unfortunately does indicate imminent failure of the
main fuel pump rotor, the cure for which is a replacement pump or your
own pump overhauled , please do not continue to operate your vehicle in this
condition as it can lead to failure of other components including the dreaded
cam belt failure due to seizure of the fuel pump..Injectors will also require
checking as the filings can make their way from the pump to them.

The fuel cut of solenoid simply lifts a fuel cut of valve which opens when the
ignition is on and allows fuel to pass and the engine to run,and when the ignition
is off the solenoid releases its magnetic lift on the valve and the valves return
spring closes the valve onto its seat cutting off the fuel and stopping the engine.
When swarf is present the valve wont seal and the engine continues to run.
A bit a kin to a tap which drips when closed because the tap washer wont seal.

Hope this is helpful. regards steve

I would agree it is pump but some can be reconditioned although still not cheap, cheaper than new one,

All the best Rick

ive heared of this due to carbon buildup it glows ignighting fuel even with ignition off may need a decoke

just to clarify,

Lugnutts suggestion is only applicable to petrol engines and
occurs when carbon build up in the cylinder creates a permanent source of
ignition, which replaces the spark plug as the heat source for start of
combustion of the air fuel mixture and causes the engine to continue to run on
even though the ignition has been turned off. This does not apply to
Diesel engines as compression ignition ceases as soon as fuel is cut off.
