depends on the fridge make... Dometic seem to be always outside, whilst thetford are inside

On ours the externals vents come off, you pop the winter cover in and then put the vent back in on top

But whats the reason for using them. I was always under the impresion that the more ventilation the fridge has...the better it works.
I have the winter covers but have never used them as I didnt know what for.
I have an automatic fan that cuts in when the fridge gets to hot, surely these winter covers are defeating the object, but then again I could be wrong.

Hi Snowbird: The reason for using them is to cut down on the dreaded
draft which is a real pain in the winter months :whatthe:

Ive always assumed that the heater vent cover stops muck and bullets and wet getting in ...but it had to be off when the heater was in use.

With the fridge can anyone confirm the fridge can be used in all 3 modes
with the covers on

or not????

What draft....I dont have a draft in mine. Do you use these things when the fridge is lit???
Does it not stop the fridge functioning properly?.

RAPIDO, told me they are only to be used when you are washing the motorhome,
to stop the water getting in from the hose pipe.......
And when the motorhome is laid up for the winter and not being used, to stop the rain and snow getting in.
I was told on no account must they be used when the fridge and freezer are lit and in use!!:Eeek:

Why do I see so many with them on when in use. I thought it strange when I saw them.

The fridge uses energy ie. heat to drive the refrigeration cycle.. if it get's too hot or too cold it will be inefficient .. .. it is a fine balance.. the vent covers help save heat energy in winter. A fan helps remove surplus heat in summer.

Absorption
The absorption cooling cycle can be described in three phases:

Evaporation: A liquid refrigerant evaporates in a low partial pressure environment, thus extracting heat from its surroundings – the refrigerator.

Absorption: The gaseous refrigerant is absorbed – dissolved into another liquid - reducing its partial pressure in the evaporator and allowing more liquid to evaporate.

Regeneration: The refrigerant-laden liquid is heated, causing the refrigerant to evaporate out. It is then condensed through a heat exchanger to replenish the supply of liquid refrigerant in the evaporator.

Think on it like the human body .. we need more clothes in winter and less in summer to maintain a safe body temperature
