LPG has long been the traditional fuel for heating, cooking and hot water but as we all know, it's not always easy or convenient to get an exchange bottle or fill up when abroad .. indeed it's one of the most frequently asked questions..

Some vans are fitted with diesel heaters so why not go the full hog and have a diesel cooker.. ? Webasto now have a ceramic top model.. HERE They also do a diesel hot water heater.

You could then go far beyond the normal bounds of touring areas without the worries of finding gas supplies.. That just leaves the fridge.. which could be 12v compressor .. which could be easily powered from a solar panel..

Bonus, only one fuel to buy, frees up another locker and reduces weight..

LPG is cheaper!

I use diesel for heating on my boat and there is no tax on that element of the fuel, so I guess the same could be done for motorhomes but it would be extremely confusing and an administrative nightmare.

not suggesting a tax free fuel.. nor trying to split it.

LPG is cheaper.. are you sure .. have you done the energy calculations of LPG versus diesel ? ... :winky:

LPG energy density is 65% compared to diesel and about 75% compared to petrol

Having looked many times on ebay USA,have noticed many of the top line RVs such as Prevo etc are predominantly all electric. Also most US bus conversions have no gas as most are all electric.I suppose if your running a diesel genny down the road it makes sense,or are they running huge battery banks and an inverter.

Can't remember ;)
Hi Jim I did a comparison about 3-4 yrs ago when I first saw the diesel cooker :thumb:It sounded good but it was very expensive to buy compared to LPG -both heater and cooker came to over £2,000 comp to less than £1,000 for LPG equivalent :Eeek: -also thought of fitting a extra red tank to run both ::bigsmile:

energy per kilo

Gasoline (petrol) Chemical 47.2 megajoules
Diesel Chemical 45.4 megajoules
Propane (including LPG) Chemical 46.4 megajoules
so lpg produces more energy than diesel and slightly less than petrol:thumb:
so overall lpg being cheaper, you get more energy per £££

there are gas less m,homes out there . they stay on campsites have ehu. cook outside on barbies . never use the cooker because it will make it loose money.use an electric fan heater ,think they have never used the water heater. never use the toilet as it will get dirty. take your shoes off at the door . cover all the seats with throws so they dont get grubby .think of the resale value. etc etc .
is that what you was thinking of ?then get old and die leave it to the kids who let their kids dribble icecream every where, smoke and generally have fun.
you must have seen them, they are all over the place.

you forgot about density ..

Forecourt fuels are sold by volume .. re check wiki :winky:

This is the correct way to compare:

Propane 1 gallon = 91,500 BTU
Petrol 1 gallon = 125,000 BTU
Diesel 1 gallon = 139,200 BTU

this is why a diesel engine does more MPG than a Petrol engine

and a Petrol engine more MPG on Petrol than LPG

but jim as you know lpg in bottles is sold by weight:thumb:not volume
and also you havent shown the heat of combustion.

chris, I am not going to debate ..

I pointed out your error and gave the BTU figures .. they speak for themselves, they are also borne out by MPG obtained by the three fuels in an internal combustion engine.

last word.
as did i with your error, but we are talking about a cooker not an engine?:ROFLMAO:
and lpg is sold by weight in bottles, and volume in gaslow or lpg tanks when bought at forecourts, that why gaslow, bottles are bigger than than calor bottles for the eqivalent amount of gas.
a kilo of gas will produse more BTU than a kilo of diesel:thumb:
last word:thumb:
