TV for mh, can anyone advise please? (1 Viewer)

We are looking to buy a tv for the mh, will any make be alright or are some specifically designed for them. The 12v ones seem to be quite expensive, but just wondered if they were more robust and better for travelling around?
Would appreciate any advice you can offer......many thanks!

Depending what size screen you want you can buy 12V LCD TV's with built in DVD and Freeview from well under a £100 or spend £300+ on an Avtex.

The most important thing we found is the viewing angle. Try and view the screen from the sides and up and down. We bought a cheap TV/DVD combi and found that the picture appeared negative/very dark unless you were sitting straight in front of it. In the end we changed it for an Avtex and what a difference.

That's a good tip for any TV, including large ones for use in the house. Also for PC monitors.

We plumped for asn Avtex after looking at loads. a bit more money but well worth it.
Has cause to return it shortly after we bought it as it had a loose dvd belt and their customer service was excellent - they picked it up & delivered it back witing 4 days!
Not had a problem since in the two years we've had it. (3yr guarantee)

Couldn't agree with you more.
There is plenty of advice here on cheap TV's - they work well but viewing performance can be abysmal. They have been designed for proper large rooms where viewing angles are much narrower. The AVTEX and MOBILE products, on the other hand, have been designed for wide angle viewing that is inevitable in small (comparitively speaking) motorhomes. Apart from that, re-tuning everytime you move is necessary so the purpose built product is designed to make this easier whereas a domestic TV (12v or not) is normally tuned only once - when first installed - and the tuning procedures are usually buried in the system, never to be found again!

Squire makes a good point. Avtex are dearer for a reason. They are easier to tune - which you need to do every time you stop. Viewing angles are good. and whilst some cheaper TV's may be 12v, Avtex are much more tolerant of voltage variations, again important in a motorhome where you voltage may not be constant.

A feature I like from the Avtex is the inbuilt FM transmitter, which means you can easily run the TV sound through the van's audio system and get surround sound.

Finally, in some countries (eg Spain) the local DVBT transmissions for some programs include soundtracks in English and Spanish and the Avtex has the facility to switch between them. So a dubbed US film can sometimes be viewed with its original english soundtrack through spanish TV transmission without a satelite.

Ours is on a flexible arm, which tilts forwards/backwards and from side to side. It's a cheapo LG and does the job well.

I also noticed some CSi shows and movies etc. in France recently on local digital (DVB) with the audio in English.....:thumb:

After a demonstration from that Haganap bloke I bought an Avtex which I'm very pleased with. Although they're not cheap they have many facilities which are useful in the van e.g. Recording programmes to a memory stick. I bought a bundle which comprised of the TV(16"), a powered aerial & a carrying case. Easy to tune, good viewing angles and pretty good sound all in a package less than 3kg :thumb:

Get one of these. I got the 19" tv/dvd combi and it is great. Viewing angle of 170 degrees and an exceptional picture.

We just wanted to say "very many thanks" to everyone who has responded to our question on tv advice for the mh. You have all been really helpful and all the advice will be very useful to us when we go to make our choice.

It is great to know that there are so many knowledgeable people out there, who are so willing to offer advice:thumb:
