I'm a newbie
Hello everyone. Not sure whether this is the right place to start this thread but here goes: We've been looking at vans for the past couple of months and have finally settled on the fact that we fancy a Hymer. Rejected the Hymer 46 after having a couple of looks and decided we want something a bit more roomy inside. We have found a Hymer B544 2.5 peugot diesel 1991 H reg 106000 miles on the clock. It's quite a journey from where we live to view it so we've asked for lots of pics and asked lots of questions. We've had so many bad experiences of travelling miles for vans in 'fantastic condition' only to find a heap of rubbish at the other end! This van looks very tidy from the pics and the seller has been very helpful. We are new to this and just wonder if anyone can give some advice about what to look out for. we've been told to look out for damp and cracks in seals etc. Should we be concerned about the mileage. Eventually after trying out here we would like to go to France & Spain. Another concern is spares, whether there might be a problem finding spares for a 20 year old van. Or are we being too ambitious thinking of taking an old van like that on a long trip? Would be v grateful for any help, advice or tips. Thanks

Apart from the obvious, check the age of the tyres, over five years old they need changing, when was cambelt changed, how many miles on the clutch.

Service history is importantand how much is it!

There are so many things to look out for, you could write a book:winky:

Most important, satisfy yourself that the seller owns it, check for damp with your nose, especially in lockers, look for water marks on ceiling etc. Dont buy without checking everything and having a test drive. You could also check out my signature below

We bought an 89 Pilote R750 which has the same "DONKEY" as you,a 2.5 peogeot diesel, we went down through France, to Spain , to Scotland Wales back to France, twice, toured the West Country for four years, the milage when we bought it was 95K ,

As long as you service it, and maybe, and I advise this, get the Cam Belt done!, irrispectif of the owners say so , unless he has a receipt!, and Don't expect to break the speed record! Yes that old girl will take you to where you want, but, you need to think ahead with something that old. Has it got service history?
At 100K It's bearly run in! those Donkeys are a solid engine, not exactly dragster of the year, but a good solid dependable unit capable of 150, 200k,IF, if treated right.:thumb:

Thanks for that. They're asking £9,500. Waiting to hear about cam belt change. Don't think clutch has been replaced.
