Am I just stupid (don't all rush to answer that) but as my dogs never go in kennels I've never had them vaccinated against kennel cough and the Vet has never advised I do. It now looks like my 2 have picked the dreaded KC up at the CC site in Littlehampton where they regularly socialised with half a dozen pooches in the dog field. Vets tomorrow to confirm it but both are hacking away like they smoke 40 Camel fags a day

Sorry to hear this , not sure if it is catchible like this, but know that our kennels wont accept any dog without a K.C. vaccine

I always thought it was from enclosed kennels with damp quarters / condensation building up and not from open fields, IMHO
Hope your family recovers quickly always worrying, but would certainly ask the CC site about it if confirmed KC

When I spoke to vet on phone he said that kennel cough is a misleading name as they can catch it anywhere there are groups of dogs. Very infectious and can turn nasty though in most cases it supposedly clears up after 5 weeks. Not taking that chance when we're hopping from one campsite to another

same with ours...and they insist on the vacine at least one week before the dogs need kenneling.

thimk i'd be looking for different kennels, with a little more sense when it comes to vaccinations.

Kennel cough is very treatable these days.

I really feel for you xxxx and wish the little ones all better soon.

As we have foxes visit our garden we always have all the vaccinations done and we make sure our pets are protected from mange too which also can easily be picked up, especially in country settings.

I always get my Buddy his Kennel cough even if he does not go in kennels as it is so infectious.

Hope your pets are soon better.

Ellie has never been vaccinated for kennel cough but our Jack Russells were because they went into kennels. Mange is rife around here and if you see a fox, it will have a very skinny tail, having lost it's fur to mange. ::bigsmile:

Years ago I had 2 Springer Spaniels who lived in a kennel & run in the garden. One occasionally hacked away, though the other rarely did. I was told to dose her with a kids cough medicine--worked every time. I've never checked this with a vet so wouldn't advise you do it without checking first!!!!

Didn't seem to do the Springer any harm and she lived to be 14.

The trouble with the kennel cough vaccine is that it only protects against one type of the disease, and is given by squirting a powder up the dog's nose. Now Roxy, our border collie, absolutely hates this - it took three attempts on different occasions, finally with three people holding her down while the vet administered the vaccine, for her to be treated. I'm not going to put her through that again as she was so badly distressed.

Our vet says she wishes kennel owners could see the distress this vaccine can cause to many dogs. We've now found a kennel which does not insist on the KC vaccine so that's where Roxy will be going if we ever need to leave her. As another poster has said, kennel cough can be treated easily now so it's a risk we are happy to take.

Our daughter's cocker spaniel, Burleigh, however loves the vaccine - when he sees anything approaching his nose he thinks it's something to eat!

Just got back from the Vets minus £75 and with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Izzy's chest is fine and she doens't cough that much but Timmy's chest is pretty bad and very rattly. Vet wouldn't give them the KC vacc until they're better and stressed it doesn't cover everything. Seeing as she had to muzzle Timmy to listen to his chest I think he'd freak out big time if they tried to squirt something up his nose. Touch wood they'll be better in 5 days or so :thumb:

Didn't realise it had to be squirted up their noses!! poor little b****ers.

C&H usually go a petsitter in the UK if they have to be boarded out for any reason, but last trip the petsitter was full, and at short notice there was only one kennels that didn't insist on KC jab. They said KC is like a human cold--so many strains you can't treat em all with one jab. C&H had a very happy week there and greeted owners like old friends.
If mine ever get it I think I'll resort back to the kid's cough mix.

Hope yours are better soon. Keep them moving gently so no fluid settles in their lungs, they're probably tougher than you think.

Some years ago a previous Border Collie of ours caught kennel cough and was really poorly with it. The vet gave all sorts of injections and pills, to little effect. Then someone suggested we try a small drop of Benylin (?spelling?) and the cure was pretty much immediate and lasting.

Totally agree with that bit about checking with a vet though!

Just to let you know that Jessie contracted Kennel Cough last year and the only place she had been to was the local park!! Just shows that it can be picked up anywhere.

She was so miserable for a couple of days with a terrible cough, that I decided to get her vaccinated to try to prevent future episodes. The cough cleared up quite rapidly after that.

This all happened a week before she was due to go into kennels while I was away on holiday. The kennels would have still taken her and put her in an isolation kennel. Luckily though I am friendly with the receptionist at the vets who immediately offered to have her at her home. Each day she went to work with this lady at the vets and evenings were spent on long walks with 2 other dogs. She wasn't left alone for a moment.

No wonder she looked disappointed when I arrived back home from holiday!!! :ROFLMAO:

Buddy does not like the Vaccine and wriggles a little but soon gets over it, better wriggling than suffering I think.

Hope your pet is soon better

I'm interested to see how they can get the drops or whatever up Timmy's nose when he's wearing a muzzle ::bigsmile: My usual Vet nearly lost fingers just trying to check his gums :ROFLMAO:
