MTH autogas? (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone just been away for a couple of days and tried to refill our lpg cylinders and they wouldn't refill. We did refill last year in feb when we 1st bought the motorhome but a year on we're not sure if we've just not done it right this time and we're missing something obvious. We've googled lots and searched on here and know that MTH are no longer in business. We bought our motorhome in rossendale, and search results showed the fire and subsequent prosecution by H&S in that area. Basically, I'm worried that the system we have is unsafe. We have 2x's 6kg cylinders with a separate adaptor which fits the hose fixed into the van. We're trying our best to get someone to look at it who knows about these things but everyone is ridiculously busy and not getting back to us in a hurry. I suspect we may need to get a new system but would appreciate any help/way forward with it. We live in guiseley north Leeds if anyone knows any people we could get help from that aren't too far away.thanks

Hi, I came across a post on another forum which refers to, I think, the bottles you have installed. See attached screen capture and it’s the post at the top. It says the bottles do not have an 80% cut off safety valve so please be very careful and if I was you I’d be changing them for proper alugas refillable bottles.

Thank you for yr reply, we still don't know for definite if they have or don't have the 80% cut off but I think we will have to look for replacements regardless. It's just too unknown. We're hoping that a contact we've been given can take a look asap and confirm what we have exactly.

As they have a label on them showing max fill level I think it's safe to say they don't have an 80% cut off valve.
They look like single hole bottles so to fill the one with the regulator you would have to take the regulator off and swap the hose from the other bottle. Be careful and wear heavy gloves as the gas in the hose can be at very high pressure.

Thank you kindly for yr reply I think they sound like the ones mentioned in the forum you found. There's no way of knowing how much gas we have so it's not the best system anyway so it does look like we'll have to dig deep into our pockets again. All we've done is pay out for a motorhome that we've not been able to use bought it last Feb and it just sits on the drive hopefully we'll get some use put of it soon

Yes you do as per dpsuk999 posted, "MTH began by offering two types of refillable LPG bottle - a composite translucent design with no level-gauge or 80% cut-off valve", yours are composite and translucent.

We've not really been anywhere due to lockdowns. We used a few times for heating and water but used electric for everything else.

So you have not really used alot of gas then. They might be not far from full.

We think we've used 1 of the cylinders that's all. One weighs more than the other which appears quite light now. It's a rubbish system regardless of safety as you've no idea how much is in them. Deep pockets required in this game for us novices but could be worse. There could be a pandemic and we can't even use it

Thanks but I can assure you I will not be refilling these bottles. I'm not ready to be cremated just yet

We've looked them up and will do. We love saltburn Whitby etc so will stop over and use whatever gas we have left

I work on 500 ml per day off grid for heat, cooking and fridge in the depth of winter, may I suggest that the tanks are full enough to not be able to be refilled? Just a thought.

I agree that you should replace if there is any suggestion of missing an 80% refill valve (and if they really did stop selling these before 2008, they're time expired anyway.

However, you can tell how full they are by shining torch into the translucent panels. The liquid level then becomes very obvious and far more accurately than most gauges.

if I was starting from scratch I would use Autogas 2000 in Thirsk, gave us some excellent service when needed

slightly concerned there is an issue with their web site, but I would be calling them to get it sorted if I was you

That's very low we around 1.5 to 1.8 Lt a day in the shoulder season.

Thank you for that we think you might be right. It's just brought the question of safety up for us but hubby does wonder how it's been used perfectly well for the last 20 years needless to say I am already planning replacements as I said previously I'm not ready for cremating just yet

If there's space underneath, an underslung tank won't be much extra cash and gives you a free outside locker for camping gear.
