My 7 year old daughter shamed me into making monthly contributions some months ago.

I have my concerns about where the money goes but even if a fraction of what I give ends up in the right hands its better than my doing nothing I guess.

And sending the odd £5 will help?

Kenya
Despite President Kibaki's pledge to tackle corruption, some donors estimated that up to $1bn had been lost to graft between 2002 and 2005.

Ethiopia.
http://www.ethiopianreview.com/content/8323

Somalia
In 2005, Liberia was ranked 137th in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index. Somalia followed closely behind in the 144th position. But while by 2009, Liberia had managed to creep up the rankings to 97th, Somalia had slipped into 180th - earning the unenviable title of the country perceived to be the most corrupt.

So while Somalia and Liberia share many characteristics - a collapsed state, warlordism, countless peace processes and leaders who have used their country's resources for self-enrichment - one country appears to be recovering, while the other deteriorates further.

Corruption has marred every aspect of Somali society. Business warlords have adjusted to the climate of lawlessness - avoiding taxes, selling expired food and drugs, sustaining anti-state forces and commercialising so as to profit from areas that were traditionally in the public sector.

South Sudan
The nascent government of South Sudan on Friday says embarked on procedures to stop the illegal transfer of money to foreign banks.

Government officials and private businesses are believed to have siphoned off billions of dollars mostly from the oil revenues. South Sudan depends heavily from revenues from oil. Little attention is paid to none oil revenues.

Remember Live Aid?
Nothing has changed.

There has to be another solution, and , I would rather give my £5 to UK charities, to spend in the UK. Our pensioners are struggling, they MUST come 1st.

As I posted Link Removed only 18 days ago, there has to be an alternative to simply pouring in charity donations to maintain failing lifestyles.

We've sent the fiver (or whatever amount) time after time but it hasn't brought effective change. I was shocked, on Monday, to see a BBC report that people in Uganda have responded to UN attempts to end aid dependency by sending their children to beg rather than help themselves.

Just as with the benefit dependency sub-culture in this country, there has to be a change because long term sustainability of failure is impossible.

No flak from me, you are only saying what many think but are fearful of saying ..

besides.. the UK has already pledged £23mil .. almost ten times more than the US , Germany and France .. combined.. The US public have a long memory .. remember the dead US soldier dragged through the streets of Mogadishu ?

I'm all in favour of giving where I KNOW it will go to the people intended and put to proper use.. no point feeding a man for a day if he starves tomorrow.. give him the means to feed himself..

Well I give 20 quid per month to 'Save The Children' and I'm pretty certain (from receiving their regular updates) that this money IS being spent in the right places.

We all have our own point of view and I don't want to get into an argument with anyone on this excellent forum but if I'm honest, I really do think that the old adage of saying "yeah I would donate but the money never gets there" is a bit of a cop out quite frankly. Why do I say this? Because it used to be MY answer as well.

When you get actively involved with regular donations and receive updates of where your money has gone, it really does give you a different perspective on things.

As I say, just my point of view and I don't want to upset anyone who thinks differently.

Regards,

Bal

It is sad to see anyone suffering and my heart goes out to anyone who is.

However as a country we have given 23 million pounds in times when many of us are having to tighten our belts.

A lot of the African countries are so corrupt that the money given from charities, dont reach those that need it the most, it lines the pockets of those who profiteer from the countries plight.

I know from first hand about the corruption in Africa, a family member has been threatened with death because they wouldnt place a large contract with an officials brother, the contract was worth millions and was via a charity but run by an american business, the officials family had no experience in the specialised contract requirements.

We will be going to Africa on tour in a few years, we will leave it to we are more experienced in travelling before tackling Africa, due to security risks. But when we go we are hoping to do some charity work out there, and donate to people has we see approriate.

Sorry to offend anybody.... But I will not give to oversea`s aid charity`s..

Many years ago I got to see what the people who run these charity`s were creaming off.. Yes A Boss or Chairman receiving something like £40K a year and then all his side kicks. (Admitedly this was 20 odd years ago...) so what are they getting now. ???

I will add I do donate to home charity`s and have raised a lot of money for various charity`s which includes "Julia`s Hospice for terminally ill Kid`s".. So I am not foofaring the idea just the principal of how the aid gets there and how much they actually receive of my "Gift"

And I would donate gift`s (Usefull) such as Malaria Tablets/Moshito Net`s/Tent`s etc..

If and only if, I purchased them and there was an organisation that would be willing to Ship or Air Freight to the country`s in need....

It is no good sending money that will not get there, and any food or equipment must be imported to that country, cos they have no food or means of making the equipment that is needed.. So I would sooner send items that are needed that way I know I HAVE BOUGHT WHAT IS NEEDED..

Just my personel opinion....

I'm afraid I have to agree and no amount of daily emotional blackmail will make me give my money to overseas charities where there is so much corruption.

I raise a lot of money for UK charities where I know I am making a real difference to people's lives, wherever in the world they come from.

I will not give to foreign countries. Period. Never mind the heart renching photos, l can show you one of my dear grandson Freddie, one year old, severe brain damage, cerebral palsy, and now registered blind. With help our family managed to raise £2,500 last month, for a sponsored 24 hour bike ride, and only last weekend, managed £250 for a sponsored race in costume, along the beach. This is all given to Rebecca house, a children's hospice and respite centre on the Isle of Man where Freddie was initially looked after, a super place that relies on donations. That's where my money will go.

This is an interesting link, for those who are intested,,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_charitable_countries

Sending bottles, tents, drugs whatever is a very short term solution. The real truth is that most of their suffereing is caused by four things:

a) Corrupt politians/systems.
b) The area of the world they live in is in decline/drought and is not capable of sustaining man/woman.
c) Civil wars and border disputes.
d) Far too many people living in such an area.

Our best bet would be to change the infrastructure, make sure that the area is capable of supporting X thousands.
Supply them with birth control and make sure that the sustainable numbers are not exceeded.
Stamp on hard the dictarors and othe corrupt officials.

If they still chose to live in such an area and overpopulate it then they know what the end result is going to be.

Otherwise you will still be sending your £5 in 3 /5/7/150/200 years time and nothing will have changed.

it has all been said already, corruption creaming of the top of every donation lack of planning to prevent situations like these arising, lack of family planning etc. Hard though it may be I'll restrict and charitable fundraising to UK projects, goodness knows enough people are suffering in this country before we jump on the overseas aid bandwagon. [HI]Yes charity begins at home and until things in this country are sorted should remain so.[/HI]

It's really worse than this. We are aiding their misery by supporting them as we are doing. There is an undeniable fact, these are people in the wrong place. Their lives are one misery after another. Their lands have turned against them.

There seems to be two logical solutions, let them die back to a sustainable level if there is one for such a land or move them to somewhere better.

The kind of money we have thrown at them in the past could surely have bought them a settlement somewhere better. Then perhaps they no longer have to contingency breed, if the survival rate is good smaller families are acceptable.

This is an insignificant problem on a global scale, if we continue to breed as we do the whole world will end up hungry with "might is right" America getting ever more desperate to maintain it's lifestyle and the rest of the world not far behind.

Stop everyone breeding is essential before it's too late.

Blimey ,where did you get that idea from - 'The Memoirs of Norman Tebbit'?

Maybe they should 'get on their bikes' and move elsewhere - maybe to a Country that IS actually quite wealthy with a pretty good infrastructure to support other human beings. Let me think - what about the UK?

Ooooooh no, can't have that.............can we!

No, sorry, I agree with Brian we certainly can't! This country is already too crowded.

They're stumbling from one crisis to another and no amount of knee jerk aid relief will ever solve the problem, trouble is like our welfare problems at home, nobody will ever have the will to push through any long term solution.

We already supply them with contraceptives and teach them about family planning and ShiftZZ said once we can supply water to an African village for £2 a month, why does it cost us £400 a year in the UK :winky: but, joking aside, something needs to be done. Somehow we need gear the aid to help them settle in or near to their own homeland and make that a condition of continuing support.

You will NEVER change places like that, having lived for ten years in Africa, the work done then to help has been all but destroyed as I found out when I returned a few years ago.

Corruption is Rife, there are the haves and the have nots, the have nots are treated like dirt by the haves, there are strict caste systems, they will never change for generations.

As for the charities, these are hard core businesses, they will use bully, emotional and other tactics to get your hard earned cash, and you will be lucky if 10% gets to where you thought it was going.

PLEASE, look at the accounts of some of the large charities, look at the salaries, expenses v income, it will blow you away.

Here is one example http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2002/apr/10/charityfinance3

I give to charity, but direct to where I want it to go, I am not lining the pockets of people who use the word 'charity' to enhance or maintain their own lifestyle, or even have a great holiday / adventure on the back of it with only a small some of all collected going to where it should.#

OK another one, check out Cancer Research, £126 MILLION !!! paid in wages last year, compare that to the income percentage wise, all on page 40 of this pdf, also see how many staff are in the big pay bands, great job if you can get it http://aboutus.cancerresearchuk.org...n/@abt/documents/generalcontent/cr_049662.pdf

It is not that simple ie cancer research does pay out all that money, but how else do you fund world leading research into cancer?I am sure anyone who has experienced the latest cancer treatments available thinks that this is money well spent! This is just my personal opinion as it is to give a few bob now and then to charities, its only money ,and as the song goes it cant buy you love:winky:

This is why i seldom post on such matters because it rattles people to the core, but i see at least four others like the post so im not on my own, what rattles me to the core is we in this country are sinking because nobody seems to have the gonads to stand up and say whats on their minds because their to scared of not being PC we have railway contracts going over seas, bankers have robbed us blind but we have to pick up the peices, overseas aid, our young men are being killed every day in a country we should not be in etc etc so like i said in my original post it may sound harsh but you or me are not going to sort the national dept or world famin out so you will just have to sit there being rattled as i will have to sit here with the things that rattle me i wont be posting again on this subject so fill your boots Gray.

So tell us whats the answer then?

Its Ok stating what the OP said, but at least we are offering a solution, a possible solution...
Sending no end of £££££££ has done NOTHING, we are in the same position that we were some 25 years ago, charities are there in force, tents, water purification. End result, NOTHING...

So JJ or any other funster, I am happy to listen, but chucking money into a bottomless pit is not one. It been tried and its FAILED.

AIDS, Corruption, Nepotism, Bribary is rife.

Look at the following link and you will see that the poorer nations are African and have the highest birth rate,,
