Brilliant keep them coming, as an aside, which are the best travel books to buy, I’m guessing France passion for starters👍
I've not needed any books since I found this site. Absolutely brilliant!

All the gear, and no idea!
Fly over it or sail around it is best advice.

It’s full of disease and weirdo’s. (French and French based Funsters excepted)
Chris, as I’m a newbie, can you tell me and other noobs when and why you fell out with France? If it’s a personal thing, tell me to do one

Tracking the Eastern side south is all beautiful and it’s heading towards northern Italy where you could carry on to Croatia. You won’t be disappointed and stopping on aires and France passion sites is exciting. Get the search for sites and/or camper contact app for all the stopovers you will need.
I think theres maybe an argument for each area in France, dependant upon what you like.

We made the trip across Italy from Pontebarnado to Trieste in a day. Just checked and it was 700 km and 7 hours travel because as soon as you got to the motorway at Cuneo it was motorway all teh way. I remember the sat nav saying in 450+ kilometers turn right. What shocked me was it only cost about 45 euros in tolls.
We waited for a rainy day to make the crossing as I had a flight book backed from Venice for 4 days work.

Have to agree there are many outstanding places to stop at from the Alsace downwards.

If I were only allowed one spot, then Provence, away from the coast

Yes as a former road cyclist in my youth I’d like to go Mt Ventoux to pay my respects to Tommy Simpson as he was from the next village to us.
You can stay up the top overnight.

Riviera east of St Tropez can be a bit of a pain, hard to find anything other than over fussy campsites frequently full of families with little or no view. I'm very happy to learn of exceptions btw.
We stay rural or quiet off season and avoid busy areas, so yes I can imagine st tropez is not quite so good.

We stayed outside St Tropez and went in by scooter. Sat at a pavement cafe for refreshments and felt like Jonny Halliday and Sylvie Vartan. Didn’t see Bridget Bardot though. Smugness personified.

Turn right off the ferry /Tunnel to Brittany, over to St Malo, down the Rance to Dinan, over to Concarneau down through Lorient, Pornic, La Rochelle, and a slow drive through the Dordogne after Isle du re. Bordeaux, Biarritz, St Jean du Luz over to Narbonne, Marseille, and the South Coast, Borme Les Mimosas, St Tropez and back through the mountains and the Verdon Gorge and suit yourself. Fair old way though, how long are you going for? Loads of great places in France. Set myself a goal to get around the hole coasts of France Spain and Portugal years ago, it’s been well worth it over the years, found some great places, South of France and Dordogne can be a bit touristy but still worth visiting

I've been to France probably 20 times.
10 on bike and 10 camper.
Been everywhere. Can't remember where.
Always amazing.

I love the place. It's the amazing variety that makes it so good.

Find out when the River festival is at Dinan, we spent a week there at the Aires under the Viaduct a few years ago, lots of fun and frivolity, great place to chill as well.

Not found any part of France we don't yet, but we don't do big cities.
Wot he said!

Its all brill, but we keep clear of big cities and pricey tourist traps.

We have a soft spot for Languedoc Rousillon, having had a wee house there back in the day,you can get to Les Pyrennnes and also Med coast. Not as spectacular as eastern France though. Enjoy!

Been visiting France for well over 40 years, still haven't seen all of it and there are no parts really poor, most of it is really nice. It does have everything, except, possibly, good ale, though that is changing. The wine is rather good I find.

👍🏻 Re the Ale. Get yourself to Chamonix. My lad has a brewery and bar for that very reason. He’s been in France for about 10 years or so and just could not find a decent pint. His answer, make some. So he started a brewery (Big Mountain Brewing) and a bar brewing Ales. Obviously I’m biased but they are very good beers. He usually has a lager and wine on for the ladies as well as a dozen or so craft beers as well as more traditional ales.

We really like the area south of Bordeaux. There are some lovely lakes and gorgeous countryside. We also like the beaches along there, many of which are amazing and virtually deserted. The sea is wonderful, as you get plenty of surf and waves.

3 weeks is nowhere near enough to do Croatia, you will be passing so many great places and then have hardly any time there. What time of year are you going? last July we only had 3 week-ish between release and commitments and stuck around Normandy/Brittany and had a great time, weather is a lottery though. What sort of things do you want to do?

France Passion only gives locations to stop at which are now featured on S4S.
l have a book titled “100 best villages of France” it’s easy to track a tour taking in the villages you fancy visiting, this could be other topics that suit you.
You could start here if you like old medieval villages.

The aire is now run by Camping-Carpark.com we stopped there in 2019 whilst following the TDF and yes it’s a lovely village with a few good eating establishments and bars
The aire isn’t much to look at but it’s proximity to the village makes it a good stopover for a couple of nights

I've recommended them before but here we go again! :) The DK Eyewitness guides are very approachable and are filled with maps and colour images. They are the easiest way to identify the best regions and places to go. I would start with the one for the whole of France but get one of the regional ones for more detail of a specific area.
