I've just been contacted by a user of the Parking web site who was disappointed to discover a height limit of 3m. at Asda's Carlisle petrol service when they need 3.2m clearance for their coachbuilt motorhome.

She emailed Asda to ask if all their fuel services have the same restriction and received the following reply:
Thanks for getting in touch about our Petrol Stations.

I'm sorry to hear you are unhappy with the height limit of 3m at our Carlisle store. I appreciate you need a 3.2m clearance for your coachbuilt motorhome, and can understand your disappointment.

I have been in touch with our Petrol Team and all of our Petrol Stations have a 3m height restriction. I know this won't the news you want to hear, and I'm truly sorry for the inconvenience it will cause you.

Ah well, Asda's loss is other suppliers' gain.

Asda at Greenhithe has a 4metre limit, There is a sign that says this but no height barriers.

We always use this one.

found various heights

I have found various heights.

One of the issue I have being an RV is that we are fairly tall, especial with the air con box, saterlite dome and other roof items.. The entry height to some fuel stations, especially Tesco is they have cameras located below the roof of the canopy, I have to get Sue out of the RV and walk some distance away infront to get me round this obstructions. The height signs are not often as they say they are.

Always take it easy going in.. the only ones that are all OK seem to be motorway services.

Just been Googling ,...

Canopy heights are governed by local planning laws.. this will vary from county to county .. for example..

In Cornwall
In order to minimise visual intrusion, pylon signs should be no taller
than the canopy, and no more than 3m high in villages or designated
landscape or townscape areas.
The canopy should be of a simple uncomplicated design with a
maximum fascia depth of 600mm.
The canopy height should be of the minimum height to cater for
expected traffic.
Special care should be taken to reduce light pollution - fascias should
not be illuminated, and lighting limited to the kiosk entrance and
pump area only.
Avoid bright, shiny or glossy materials which reflect light over long
distances, and are visually obtrusive.

compared to Dudley

1. A canopy over a petrol filling station must
be designed as an integral part of that
station and should relate to the scale and
position of the adjoining buildings and
spaces,
2. Canopy fascia depth should generally be
limited to 0.75 m (2’6") and only the brand
name should be illuminated,
3. The maximum underside height of any new
canopy should not exceed 4.5 m (14’10").
4. The maximum size of one face of the head of
pole/gantry sign should not exceed 2 m2
(21.5 sq ft),

Many filling stations have facilities for commercial vehicles with no canopy .. that's what I used to always use with the RV .. much easier access and faster filling with no cut off at 99lt .. .. only downside was they sometimes ask for your plastic before turning the pump on..
