I've had some close shaves with the RV .. but thankfully never tail swiped a pump .. the only damage I've ever suffered was to my wallet ... :roflmto:

Take extra care ... has anything like this ever happened to you ?

Motorhome insurance specialists Caravan Guard are warning motorhomers to take extra care when filling up their motorhomes at service stations.

Accidents involving petrol pumps or collisions with other vehicles continues to be a massive issue for motorhomers.

Over the last few years Caravan Guard have seen consistently high numbers of accidents involving petrol stations, and with the average cost of a claim around £2000 it’s something worth bearing in mind.

Teresa Eastwood, Caravan Guard’s Claims Liaison Manager, had this advice for motorhomers: “Service stations can be tricky for larger motorhomes to navigate, with tight petrol pump spaces which are generally better suited to cars.

"Our advice would be to use the outer pumps so that you’ve got more room to manoeuvre, even if another one is free, as a few minutes extra waiting is a lot less hassle than an accident.”

Caravan Guard has also seen cases where motorhomers have accidently put fuel in their water tank, which can cause massive amounts of damage. Why not put some labels on the water tank and fuel tank to avoid mix ups?

Interesting post that Jim.. and esp. worth taking on board for those with a long overhang at the rear ( if you know what I mean ! )

Swinging away from a pump at too great an angle can cause the back end to clout said pump..

But that last bit, as quoted..

If you need to label water and fuel holes, I have a far better suggestion..

Sell the van and take up used match collecting.. it is proly all your brain can safely handle !!

( apologies to anyone on here who might have actually done it, but gotta call it as I see it ! )

My thought's exactly! I can understand the senior moment with mixing up diesel/petrol, sort of, worries me as Winne being diesel and having not run a diesel vehicle in around 20 years:Eeek:

As to picking the most suitable pump for access, I thought that would be obvious too, but maybe not.

Suppose it all boils down to we're only human and make mistakes, but taking a moment in all we do helps, not that I'm imune to 'senior moments':ROFLMAO::Doh:

Time before last we went over to the van, fine, no problems but it would have helped if I'd had the keys:Doh:

My Petrol RV is very tricky amongst cars. Car owners are plain stupid though the things they do sometimes to when a large vehicle is present.

LPG pumps:Doh: well

More simple advice for motorhomers using fuel stations - "Engage brain on entry"

Rather like the sign I once saw leaving a motorway service area which said, "To avoid accidents drive safely"

Or one seen on a packet of peanuts, "Warning contains nuts"

I always feel tempted to make one up and put it on the top of beachy head the next time we are going that way. "Jumping off these cliffs may result in injury or death" ::bigsmile:

Been there, done that.

About 2 years ago we were going on holiday in Wales and my wife travelled down the day before in the car with the kids as I needed to work.

I trundle down to the van on the Friday evening in a relaxed holiday state. Had the keys so no problem. Well, that is until it came to removing the wheel lock. Not usually a problem as we kept the keys in a rucksack at home and it was only 20 minutes away.

Problem was said wife had taken the rucksack to Wales - 275 miles away.....

Five hours later I was on my way having found a guy to get the damn thing off:cry:

There is a notice somewhat along those lines in a viewing area on the Route des Cretes round part of the Gorge du Verdon, which basically advises you "not to peer too far over the edge to see how far it is down. To save you the trouble and the personal danger, we can tell you it's X hundred number of metres" It's in about 5 or 6 languages, we howled when we saw it.

With the trailer I am 45' long (over 13mtrs)

As I have a petrol engine (V10 6.8ltr) I have to fill the RV on the normal petrol pumps and cannot go on to the truck pumps as you can for Derv.

I have to consider very much the space I need to swing away from a pump to ensure the rear of the RV does not side swipe the pump or the metal guards they often have now. Plus the trailer with the car on it which is 7'6"wide .. so it is rather a large item to get in and out of fuel stations.

Only the other week at the Great Escape I pulled in to the Petrborogh Service to take on fuel.. even allowing for my size .. and all the other pumps at midnight were empty, some boy racer has to pull up the side of me on the next pump... cannot get the doors open (idiot).. and then fills up.. so I have to sit and wait for him to fill and pay and move before I can pull out to avoid the pump I am on.

I have received verbal abuse a few times when cars cannot get past me ...well it takes along time to fill an RV... they come in out the £20 in and want to pull out... me I am still only half full and it is going to take a while...

The time spent at the pumps gives you plenty of chance to answer the dumb questions of 'bet that don't do much to the gallon' or 'god I bet thats not cheap to run' ??

'Really I never thought about that before I bought it and it is now a complete suprise as I stand here filling it up'

Hit a petrol pump many years ago when I was a tugger. My fault of course, but the cost of the claim was outrageous. I was a bit miffed as the concrete pump base was still wet and the pump moved because of this, meaning they had to dig a chunk of forecourt up to check the pipework. With hindsight I wish I'd contested the size of the claim - pumps are set in concrete for a reason and if it's wet then the garage should not have been open.

The last company I worked for as a HGV driver before I retired from driving for a living..used to use a largeish Shell station nearby to the company premises not only us but another fair sized HGV company as well..The garage loved our business..the company I was with had 12 HGVs 8 artics and 4 large rigids the other company just a couple more ish!!
On a Friday afternoon sort of 4 o'clock onwards the garage got a tad busy with us filling up and as the access to the HGV diesel pump was a bit tight we would wait in line one done one on routine...I don't suppose it helped matters with a Maccy Ds next door so the burger and fries crew would have to wait to get out...One guy actually went to the garage owner and demanded that "These smelly trucks be moved " so he could get out..garage owner just said are you filling up with £200 quids worth of diesel then..No then wait...nice..
That's why when I got my motorhome I went there to fill up and use the HGV pump...Mind you it was a lot faster than the other diesel pumps but I knew that..and I always tended to use the HGV pumps at filling stations anyway..just a bit more room...Mind you if the big boys came in I'd finish filling and move forward so they could get in and get filled up..and they always acknowledged it..after all time is money to them fellas!!

The garage we fill up at with the trucks and the Rv is tight not only because of tail swing but also where the building is, to add to the agro as you go out there is a sttep incline so you have to take it at an angle to avoid decking the rear end.

Car drivers hate us (and every other HGV that uses the garage) even more so when I am in the RV because I cant use the Truck pump it pumps too fast and keeps cutting off, so imagine taking the space of 4 cars and four pumps and taking 500ltrs of diesel onboard, Oooooooo I am popular :ROFLMAO: not, do I care nope nor does the garage I spend £10k a month with them.

All the best Rick

Gorge du Verdon.

Are you sure the advice wasn't not to pee down?

Frog pee from X hundred metres certainly would be one in the eye for most visitors
