I had to take the RV - Winnebago to our local garage to get the genny oil replaced (they had installed a semi synthetic oil when it should have been mineral..).. so it had to go back for a change. That means going through some not to nice country roads out of Tunbridge Wells.

The usual mad mums rushing kids to school or travelling to fast back.. the odd coach and truck... now I value my Valvec wing mirrors.. you would at the best part of £400 a head. So I tend to go slower and give way.. being 9'11" wide on the mirrors ...

But this week I was forced in to the trees on the side /hedge... got a few scratch marks on the fiberglass curb side of the hab area high up.. so this morning in the hot weather I have had Sue up the scaffolding tower to tcut the areas.. fortunately they have come off.. but I just hate country lanes ..especial when you are being forced in to the side due to excess I've speed.

The worse trucks are the scaffolding type and the builders.. under 7.5 tons ..

What really amazed me was on a road out of Tunbridge Wells and this is a normal main road.. there was not enough room for a heavy recovery truck with a lorry on the spec frame and us to pass.. so he does the right thing and holds before it gets narrow and flashes me to come down.. 3 cars ...sorry all women over take him and end up in front of me with no where to go. What should have been a couple of minutes at the most took 15 getting them backed up around and behind the breakdown truck.

There are always idiots that don't pay attention - saw some only yesterday as traffic pulled in to let several police cars and an ambulance pass, and two prats pull out to overtake them, blocking the ambulance from getting through!

I can't say travelling tunbridge roads is particularly interesting either, so seem to drag on forever!

I LOVE country lanes, left wrenbury yesterday and plotted a route home that maximized travel on single track roads. One 5 mile section had grass up the middle, we detoured a little to Devils Bridge to include the hairpins and 16% hills and swishbacks. Why? Because we can and its fun:thumb:

When they built the country roads all those years ago I guess they were not expecting RV's from the USA to meet scaffold lorries...:winky:

When I had my Iveco 60-10 I had to accept that some places were out of my reach whereas the current Wagon can go practically anywhere...:thumb:

I love country lanes, but do hate the fact that others like to use them too! Especially those who don't care about their vehicles.

these are not tiny lanes like Jim has in Wales.. these are two lanes wide country roads... running between Tunbridge Wells and Lamberhurst.. more like a race track.. you have to jump into the sides to save the mirrors. It is the way they drive that bugs me.

Another reason not to use country lanes in an RV, fuel stops, there's not enough of them to enable you to drive in a straight line.:roflmto:

And the only thing he didn't do Bob, was to put his right hand indicator on.
It is the very thing that would have told those behind him, that he was likely to carry out a maneuver, or that he was about to negotiate a hazard ahead.
It's a shame that the inexperienced car drivers, couldn't use a bit of forward planning.

Saying that though, I once had a situation in a 44 tonner, when parked up at temporary traffic lights on red, with my right hand indicator on. Matey coming up behind, overtook me, and then wondered why he had nowhere to go, as traffic was coming through from the other direction. When I challenged him, he said, "I thought that you were parked up to unload with your hazard warning lights on........................and that your left rear bulb had blown".:Doh::Doh:
Possible, but highly unlikey considering the amount of warning signage prior to the traffic lights. :roflmto:

Cheers for now,

Jock.:

6 years but caravan owner in past
On the way back from Wrenbury, we slowed down for a crash on the opposite side of the country road. A lad in a small car had gone too quickly over a hump back bridge, Taking part of the verge and a road sign with him. He seemed ok but the car was a mess.

Then on the way home we were overtaken by a supped up subaru doing at least 80 -90 mph on the A5 driven by a young lad. Straight over the hatched lines narrowly missing us.
Last week in the people mover we hit a branch being forced into the hedge by a speeding van in a narrow lane. I hate these inconsiderate speed merchants.

clipped......... I hate these inconsiderate speed merchants.
So do I Lucille, and unfortunately, they are increasing in numbers all the time.

It's not just young men though. I use small country back roads daily, with humps, bumps, and cambers all over the place, and I am often overtaken by young women in small cars, doing way over a safe speed for the road conditions. :whatthe:
They seem to think that the speed limit for these roads is compulsory, rather than a maximum, only when safe to do so.

Regards,

Jock.

Cycling out of Denbigh a couple of weeks ago we were on a roundabout and heard a vehicle coming up behind us, I shouted to my wife to pull into the kerb, we needn't have bothered, this young minx in a corsa (pink seat covers, pink furry dashboard) just shot around the roundabout the wrong way and carried on up the road without a pause in her speed. :Eeek:

Simply rule of thumb these days, assume everyone is an idiot and going to crash into you:Angry:

We had three near misses the other day driving back from Winne's storage, about 2.5 miles. Sarah was chuntering at them all but I'm starting to get blazay about them, see and avoid. We all make mistakes lets face it, it's called being human, but more and more people on the roads are just on such a mission to get everywhere. That said, once upon a time that was me, partly work, everything needed doing yesterday, and partly 'boy racer' tendencies but I learned, or rather wised up.

Is that the go fast stripes on the Winnie that makes you the boy racer Si:Blush: or is it the led lights in the windows when you are at shows:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:..

Good for you Simon... a praiseworthy bit of honesty... former boy racer here too although in my days the cars didn't go quite so fast (although we thought they did.)

First "car", 100E Ford Escort with 1172cc side valve engine, Aquaplane high compression head, twin SU carbs and a mechanical overdrive which worked on all three forward gears AND reverse...::bigsmile:

Next an Austin A30 (small rear window) with a A35 engine (1098cc) and g/box fitted (had to cut out the front floor pan and weld in the A35 one) :thumb:

Those were the days hey? Blazing down the road making lots of noise and making at least 60mph (given time!)

Never encountered a Winnebago coming the other way though ::bigsmile:

Boy JJ you are as old as me.. I had 100E.. in fact my first car was a Ford Popular 3 speed and the gear lever used to come out of the floor.. hand painted as well ..paid £15 for it.. that was a lot of dosh in these days... (1968).. few campers about in those days.. Comer based of Ford Thames if I recall, or the VW .. but I doubt many Winnebagos about.. may be the odd pig nose .. Did you manage to get to 60mph.. boy thought 45 was fast

That was the best bit you could by an ABCD box and a coil for a couple of quid.. also you could do it yourselves.. Haynes manual and you were away.. a moggie minor engine bay was so big compared to the engine you could almost get inside it. They were the days.. cheap fuel and a car you could work on... ok it broke down a lot. but these days look inside an engine compartment. My V10 Ford RV.. is full.. not a spare inch.

If only we could turn the clock back.

But I ain't admitting that...and the views were quite nice!"
