Gas on the continent? (1 Viewer)

We are about to set out on a long tour of Europe. We are on the British gas bottles at the mo and have read everywhere that these cannot be refilled in Europe. We are assuming we need to buy continental ones before we go but just interested in what other folk have done in preparation?

Only know about France, Spain and Portugal and I now use Gaslow refillable bottles...

... before I had them I had three different gas bottles and regulators (UK, France and Portugal) and swopped them as usual when needed...

I went down the Gaslow refillable cylinder route to solve this problem. That way all you need to purchase is the correct filler adaptor for the country you are in. It's not the cheapest option but certainly is convenient.

What capacity have you in your existing bottles?

Are you intending to use EHU?

Does your water heater work on EHU or gas alone?

Thanks. Are looking into those. We are paranoid about the weight of extra bottles in the van. Have had it upgraded to 3850 to accomodate all our stuff but we were on the borderline at the weighbridge (and that was before the french wine gets onboard)

One 'seasonaire' in France told us to buy boxes instead of bottles for the weight, but you don't half loose track of what you're drinking when it's in a box lol

Now that one's easier to solve. Buy a bottle of fresh water for the kettle and fill the fresh water tank with wine. Hey presto, wine on tap

Well Callumwa, we intend to go for just over 2 months. we have 2 full Brit bottles but thinking of investing in the Gasflow refilables, and will use the electricity supply as much as poss. We have a scottel cooker that we do most of the cooking on linked directly to the van bottles.

i use this Link Removed which fits on to the red uk bottles then i have adapters like Link Removed for in europe just in case we run out, i make sure both our bottles are allways full before going and we have never run out up to now.

Get Alugas bottles if you are going for refillables. When empty they weigh half the weight of Gaslow bottles and regardless of empty or full you save, if it is two big bottles, 12kg or thereabouts. Jane

We have an electric hotplate which saves us loads in gas but you need to be on lookup so if you aref planning to use sites with hookup get yourself an electric hotplate. They do sell them I have seen them. We were thinking how long will our gas bottles last the same as you but haven't even used one yet. Not even a quarter of it as we use sites with electric and use that and the microwave. The sites are low wattage but if you are careful like only using one appliance at the time you will stop the supply tripping, we have tripped once or three times but you quickly learn what not to put on together.
We haves been on France for nearly 6 weeks now and a not relishing the thought of coming back to the UK

We have one 11 kilo Gaslow bottle on board, refillable from outside (so no opening of hatches) the necessary adapters and have filled up in various locations in France since early April this year.
We haven't let the level go below half full and it's cost us about 8 Euros each time!
Two of us in the van, no heating needed as been too hot since April, but used hot water and cooking almost every day as we are using mainly Aires and no electric.
May be dear to install nut is certainly worth it if you intend to use the van.

Gas availability on the continent

We take our usual UK gas bottles,full up, but as a backup we have a bottle of camping gaz plus regulator and a butane adaptor and pipe to connect into
the current fixed regulator in the van.
You can exchange Camping gaz bottles virtually anywhere on the continent, supermarkets, garages, campsites etc. This system works extremely well, but as with every option costs cash. However, if you need gas !!!!
It's surprising how little gas you really need if you use electric hookups, its the fridge that uses the majority of gas.
There are gas depots in various places that will fill your UK bottles, when you get to a site some 'sage' will tell you where, but,whether you go down that route or not is entirely a personal choice and risk.

When we went to Zahora for 9 weeks,we heard that gas was rare, so filled 2 Gaslow 11kg, we hardly used anything, we had EHU and cooked on a hot plate in the van, only used the oven on gas.

That's easily solved, decant into used wine bottle, keep a tally of number of bottles drunk, then............er how many bochles ave we had er I dunno but lets ave another??????

But seriously Gaslow refillables is the way to go but make sure you buy the filler converters (x2). We have done 27 countries so far and never had a problem!

We decided on the 'underslung fixed tank' route.That gave us the gas locker, which could hold 2x13kg bottles, as a storage locker -it takes my ehu leads,water hose,Cadac bbq and the bottles of Toilet Fluid,windscreen washer fluid etc.
Our tank is 40ltrs,which is equiv.to 16kg when 80% full. Filler cap at rear of van-so no probs with the 'are you filling bottles' brigade.We do get our gas before we get diesel if we need both to avoid the 'gas must be for propulsion and not domestic use' rumour-once it's in-it's in then we move to the Gazole pump.
