Very basic question and am fully prepared for the usual sarky comments.

When using the Thetford toilet should the trap door be opened before use or kept shut, the manual doesn't answer this question.

Looking forward to the responses

Most people keep the trap shut, fill with water, then making sure you close the lid first so you nose is not in it operate the trap after you have finished. that keeps the bowl the cleanest.

Tough one this (depends what you have eaten) if you think its going to be a big jobbie then you could open the flap so the waste can go streight in or you could find yourself pinned to the ceiling :ROFLMAO:, thats ok if the casette is fairly clean or the smell will escape while you are sat there, i would agree with wildman on this Gray.

Open.

Good aim and bowl clean, minimises contents of cassette.

Treat it like a normal toilet and you'll fill your cassette twice as fast.

I don't use any chemicals so having the trap open for any longer than necessary is not pleasant.

Couple of inches of water, use, close lid, open and close trap quickly to dispose of contents.

We didn't have a loo in our old van and we were a bit squeamish about using it when we got our latest Rosabella - we just didn't fancy what amounts to a bucket of you know what slopping around at the back of the van. That was until our enforced stay on a garage forecourt in France a couple of weeks ago, when the alternative was the loo in the garage which K was even more squeamish about.

We still only use it on a limited basis (if you get my drift), so my answer to your question would be, use Decathlon (see our blog)!! :roflmto:

Trap open, line bowl with a few sheets of bogroll, then needs very little water to flush so doesn't fill up so fast.

I'm an Open kinda guy as well...:winky:

The paper in the bowl reduces cleaning required after, so reduces fill rate of the cassette, which when there are four of you in the van can be very fast if you were to fill the bowl with water before each Job.. :moon:

so..... Job(bie) Done......:thumb:

I rest my (open or shut) case(tte)......:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
We place loo roll in a cross shape over the open slot.

Do the do and it drops through :thumb::ROFLMAO:

If by any chance it doesn't , then a quick flush usually does it. :winky:
As there are 5 of us we have to empty the cassette everyday as only Ralph uses the public loos , if there are any where we stop.

What's a sog?
I'm new to this--be patient with me----------please?

SOG .. it's a small fan fitted to the cassette via a tube, runs when you open the shutter, it sucks out the smell and donates it to your downwind neighbours ..

SOG is a small ventilation system you attach to your Thetford or similar toilet cassette, which then keeps the cassette ventilated in such a manor that no chemicals are needed and it also stops odours entering the living space of your caravan or motorhome.

Edit to add - Beat me to it. :)

Love this thread, takes me back many years ago when I took the 'Queens Shilling'
As young recruits the Sgt. Major was explaining what was in an
'Iron' Ration Pack, he came to the ' Toilet Paper, Three pieces 'Brown'
for the use of.
Right boys when you have done you morning 'Jobbie' you will take piece ONE and stroke the offending area UPWARDS.
You will then take piece TWO and stroke the offending area DOWNWARDS.
All Clear?????
Then as always, you dumb Joe.
" Excuse me Sir! What's piece THREE for.???
"Son, This British Army thinks of everything"

"PIECE THREE!! IS FOR POLISHING"
