We have 2x 6k propane (orange) bottles and as you know we cannot get propane in France, we dont use much at present as we usually use sites with EHU but would it be possible in the future to, when one bottle runs out and when we are back in the uk (or in France I suppose) change one of the bottles to one they use over here and just buy an adaptor and regulator to use their bottle while in France and swop to propane when in the uk?

If I understand your message then you want to do what we do. on our first French visit we realised that we could not buy Calor refils. They do sell Propane but in French bottles rather than any available in the UK. We therefore bought a French Propane bottle called 'Le Cube' )Look out for the red ones as the blue ones are Butane). See here:

and 'Un Clip' to attach (This can be bought in France along with the bottle or before departure -see here:

We keep Le Clip attached to a short connecting hose ready to attch for swap over.

The French bottles cost around the same as the English but contain TWICE AS MUCH! I wish we could get them over here.

All of the items needed can be obtained from the large supermarkets in France - they are the place to go for your gas and all the other bits can be got from them or a Bricomarche (Kind of Homebase) attached or nearby.

Thanks for the info, so will that screw on the end of the hose or does a new hose have to be purchased as well?
I am thinking for safety reasons the hose will be secured and will be airtight to the existing connection?

Yes the the other end has a nut to tighten it onto your present connection. I'll see if I can take some pictures if it will help.

The attached pictures show the Calor bottle connected with the black connecting hose - pic 001. You can disconnect this pipe and replace it with the white French connection (not a clothing company!) as shown in pic 003. Le Clip is a simple push on connector shown in pic 004 and 002 is the bottle. Note that the spanner needed for the French hose is a different size from the Calor hose - an adjustable spanner that fits both might be advantageous.
If I can help further let me know

i could be confused but is 'le clip' just a connection device or is it a regulator ?
it certainly looks like a regulator

Thanks for the useful pics and the explanations. Will get that sorted when we are back in the UK.

We got ours in the French supermarket and of course the gas is not obtainable here.

Well I was suspicious, if you connect to the top of the wall mounted regulator as the pictures imply then you have two regulators in series which I think will give you low gas pressure.

Have you noticed a difference in heat when using the French tank ?

No it works fine. Presumably if they are both limiting the flow to the same pressure then the pressure will still be correct.

If it works, I guess it works. But I worry that the first reg outputs at the required pressure ( or does it ? ) then the second must restrict it a bit.

More on 'Le Cube'

We got 2 Le Cube propane gas cylinders from a Pris Unic supermarket last year. At the time Pris Unic were offering a free regulator with each Cube and insisted that I have 2 as I was getting 2 bottles (one now given away). I don't know whether Pris Unic still have the offer on but it may be worth checking out.

Whoever supplies your Cube should give you a receipt for the deposit you pay on your bottles so you should be able to get your money back if you wanted to.

Hope that's useful.
