Any information on bridge and aires nearby will be most gratefuly received ! Also planning on visting St. Mere Eglise and any D.Day beaches...Plus any other suggestions!!
Leaving on 16th.May..Portsmouth to Le Havre.. Can't wait..Due to circumstances I haven't been able to travel for a year, but now I am in the groove..:thumb:
I will be working my way down the coast to the pine forests of Aquitaine..Any one else about at that time ?? !! Coming back at the end of June...

Pegasus Bridge is well worth a visit having a museum next to the re-sited bridge and the original cafe on the opposite side of the replacement bridge.
Going up the coast from there call at Arramanche and go in the 360 degree cinema.
Then call at the cemetary at Omaha Beach before crossing in land to St. Mere Eglise. If you're still in the area on the first weekend in June then there are commemorative events to mark the D-Day landings in most towns. St. Mere is a particularly "good" one. The last two times that we've been there, there has been a re-enactment of the mass paratroop drops.

For this memorial, and others, you could use the aires in Ouistreham, 8e/night plus services, pay by card, close to the port and a little noisey at times.....N49*17.258' W000*14.998'

We use a local campsite which has an aires within its boundry, 20 hardstanding pitches, all with 10amps, fresh water/waste/ showers/wc....all for the sum of 9e/night. that was late last November. Site opens 12/2 closes 15/12

The bridge is within walking/cycling distance along the river tow path from this site, and the Bunker is in the town centre. I think, with the exception of the Bunker, all sites have good parking space, and can accept motorhomes for visits.

When you visit your first, ask for details of the discount scheme, saves about 10% but every little helps. Also, at the local TI you can have a free tourist map of the diistrict, which includes the war sites and aires locations.

We "did" that area in August 2009 - really good visit.

We stayed on the aire at St Mere Eglise - right next to the church and opposite the museum.:thumb:

We also went went to Arromanches - well worth a visit! :thumb:

We went to the Pegasus Bridge in October 2009 but didn't stay there - we were going to stay on the aire at Bayeux but it was heaving so we drove on to Le Mont St Michel and stayed there. Another excellent place to visit! :thumb:

We'll be travelling up through France around the time you're there - no set dates / stop overs decided yet though! Keep in touch!!

we visited 2009 August and stayed overnight in the car park of the museum. It's allowed but you do have to leave before 9am the next morning. There were even a couple of tents pitched on the green bits between the parking places.

Been a couple of times now and there are always quite a few vans parked up on the grass for the night.

A trip to Arromanches is a must as is the American Cemetery which has a fab museum and is free.

The Aire at Arromanches is cramped but handy for town. If you want a fantastic spot for the night and also see the most intact gun battery in the whole of hte atlantic wall go to Longues Sur Mer. Its just a couple of miles up the coast from Arromanches. When you get to the gun battery keep going all the way to the edge of the cliff and you can camp on the grass there with superb views of the sea and Mulberry Harbour for free! The gun site is well worth a visit (also free)

Hi Salopian, we used the camping municiple in Arromanches, which overlooks the aire. We found the aire at Arromanches got very busy and vans were so close together we thought very dangerous( it was our fist time in France, so were not used to seeing how many cramp there vans into aires). It was a very welcoming municle site we ended staying four days. The 360 degree cinema is a must there was a free train that takes you there from the town Have a trip

Hey Kate - we did the same - aire much too crowded so went on Municipal site - lovely site.
360 cinema was fabulous - loved Arromanches - we even bought a DVD of The Longest Day from a souvenir shop and watched it while we were there - meant so much more by being there! Our grandson was with us ( Jake was 11 then) and it really brought it to life for him. He even went swimming in the sea with Rex among the mulberry harbour things!

Ouistreham, next to the ferry port! That'll be the closest to Pegasus Bridge. It's free!

As for Arromanches, its about 6euros to stop on the car park on the cliff top adjacent to the 360 degree cinema.

We never actually visited St Mere l'Eglese, but saw the dummy paratrooper on the church spire from the bypass!

If you go as far as Cherbourg, you'll be in good company overnighting next to the Submarine and City de la Mare (Art Deco ex-railway station!) at the port. It's free!

We enjoyed the Normandy Beaches visit some years ago, when we took my Dad and Mum - Dad had been a Sapper, landed at Sword Beach and worked on the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches. He'd never previously spoken of his experiences, but we learned a lot from him on that journey. We went to the Merville Battery and bit by bit along the various sites to Point du Hoc and St Mere Eglise. A well worthwhile time for us.

Locally, of course, we have the martyr village of Oradour sur Glane, and that is another place that should be visited at least once.
