Dumfries & Galloway - SWC300 Itinerary help please

I wondered if I could be cheeky and see if I could use somebody’s SW300 Itinerary/suggestions with suitable stopovers for a 6M motorhome. We have never toured here before but have 5/6 days and want to ensure we don’t miss anything worth seeing and/or towns. We have no idea how to break it down into chunks to get the best out of the tour, and which sites to use, using SFS, or, the odd wild camp. Many thanks

Get David M. Addison’s book SWC300, it is full of ideas of things to do and see on this route.

We live in Galloway and it is beautiful at the moment. There are maps if you Google.

Do be aware that rules in Scotland are different and changing all the time. EG, you will not be able to eat out after 6 pm as all pubs, etc must close by then; no alcohol can be sold indoors, even with meals although it can be sold outdoors until 10 pm.

There are a few places that may not be on the maps: Mossyard beach, signed off the A75 just past Gatehouse of Fleet; St Ninian‘s cave, off the Newton Stewart to Isle of Whithorn road, nice walk down to the shore; Isle of Whithorn itself (MHs can park overnight at the car park at the end of the road but it is mainly grass so could be tricky in wet weather); Portpatrick is well worth a visit and has several pubs serving food, lunch time only!

There are 2 overnight places with CDP and water: Castle Corner, Caerlaeverock, on the coast road from Gretna to Dumfries (Honesty box); Clatteringshawes in the Galloway Forest, North of Newton Stewart on the A712. You can also park overnight at some other Forest car parks. Check them out at

There is a CMC site at New England Bay in the west. Right on the shore and a short drive to the Mull of Galloway.

I would avoid Stranraer at the moment as the virus is a bit more prevalent than in the rest of the area.

If there is anything else I can help with, PM me.

There's also an official site at Mossyard - https://www.mossyard.co.uk/

Think Newton Farm (just before Mossyard if heading from Dumfries) still operates a "campsite" but may be closed at the moment. No toilets \ water so a couple of quid for a parking spot on the beach.

There's also a free campsite just outside the entrance to the C&MC site at New England Bay with water (unless Council have turned it off for impending winter) and basic Ladies \ Gents toilet. Think folk empty their black waste there as well.

Toilets are closed for the season now, water was still available a couple of weeks ago.

We did it on the spur of the moment January this year over 4 nights - wild camped 1st, 2nd & 4th, and spent a nice night on a cl on the 3rd to empty tanks etc.

We did no planning, just followed our nose, although did want to do check out Mull of Galloway lighthouse and knew that Saturday night was going to be a night in Ayr enjoying the nightlife.

Spent the first night in Dalbeattie forest which dead quiet and the last night parked on Ayr seafront watching the sunset before heading into town.

We loved it so much we went back in August to check our all the places that were closed in January.

Don't worry about the planning, go for it, just be aware of local restrictions at the present time

Dunure
Dunure is worth a couple of hours to see the harbour / castle and stretch legs with a walk down to see the Two Sisters - just a couple of old rocks, but the jocks love to play stuff up ::bigsmile:
Be aware that Kennedy Park closes for winter at the end of October. However, there are are 3 laybys which are used for "wild camping" at the top of Castle Road, Dunure.

Officially you’re not meant yo go into Ayrshire at the moment as. Understand it, as it’s in the red central belt zone ...
In D&G there’s a nice site on Loch Ken next to the activity centre ... Clatteringshaws was lovely and the raiders road in between (open to 2nd Nov). Love Isle of Whithorn too and Mull of Galloway ...
