Looking thro our new toy, Auto Trail C I Carioca 15, Ifound, on the Trauma heater Dump valve, a home made split pin, looks like it was made out of a paper clip. It's holding the little red knob up. Is this a usual thing to do? If so why?
Your Knowledge as always, much appreciated!

It stops nuisance water dumping when the temp. drops outside.

Not a good idea if the van is unattended in the winter.

Yes, if the temperature gets down to about 4 degrees the valve discharges the water to protect the system. If you are trying to get the heater started at that kind of temp. the only way is to stop the valve from doing so. Many (including us) use a clothes peg. Obviously it must be removed as soon as it's running.

A paper clip is a good idea as there is a groove on the shaft it will lodge in. A clothes peg may slip off and dump all your water.
