Motorhome units? (1 Viewer)

Well.... not strictly motorhome but ......

Have recently bought a horsebox and we are refitting the living area and cannot find anywhere that does the kitchen units to fit.oh::Confused:

Have searched motorhome conversions, caravan conversions and also horsebox and cannot find where to buy them.

Do any of you helpful lovely people know where I can get some from?:thanks2:

I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone builds them for 'off the shelf' sales, most are bespoke built by or for the MH constructor/convertor.

If space permits I would look at domestic units, Wikes, B&Q etc. failing that, build or have them built by a local joiner or shop fitter.

You could also look for a cheap caravan and use as a doner vehicle .. also caravan dismantlers.. try Googling

Are you looking for brand new or second hand - if you are looking for second hand then why not look for caravan breakers - there are often ads in Practical Caravan - if you are looking for most of the contents may even be worth buying a cheap caravan for scrapping yourself you should have everything you need then.

Scotjimland - Have picked some up from B & Q but they really are quite heavy and worried about being overweight with the horses on so they are sat here in the boxes still
Do you know of any bespoke builders then?
Hubby is very handy and a dab hand with joinery but unsure of what materials to use.

Landylover - It already has the remains of an old caravan in it which we have ripped out today - was in ok condition but quite old fashioned with that "Old damp static caravan" smell The rest of it is all brand new and it seemed a shame to not put the living in it to match.
Might be a good idea of yours to see if anybody is breaking a newer model though. Will have to have a look:thumb:

Last two boxes that we did we used kitchen units from scrap caravans used to be a cracking caravan scrap yard at worsley, we used to buy the interior of a suitable caravan so got everything we needed seats, tables and we have even used the windows out of caravans for in the living area and those small toilet compartment windows made great vents in the horses part.

Weight is a problem, when you said horse box I was thinking you had tons of spare payload.. forgetting horses weigh tons oh:

Cabinets are usually built with lightweight frames and clad with thin veneered plywood with formica used for worktop .. if you have a look inside cupboards of a newish motorhome you will see what I mean ,.. hence why many MH worktops are easily damaged by tins etc falling from overhead cupboards ..

Hi Magnum motorhomes in Grimsby have all sorts of stuff and also do conversions for horseboxes etc. They are not a motorhome dealer, they sell accesories including cupboard doors, cookers sinks, windows etc well anything you might need really and are very helpful. You will find them in yellow pages. We have converted 3 panel vans over the last 20 years and have sourced lots of stuff there. The present van was converted using the insides from a caravan from a specialist breakers.

just a quick heads up please do be aware of the weight issue, if it goes over 3,500kgs a horsebox is classed as HGV, not PHGV and not drivable on a c1 license or grandfathered rights. Unlike a motorhome the fact that it has a living area makes no difference it is essentially a goods carrying vehicle and will need the correct license and insurance.

Tofo - Thanks for those, will take a look.

Lizard - They look interesting, they also have some surplus furniture board which may be handy and they are not too far from us either

Scotjimland - Yes that is the problem, it is a 7.5 tonne and at present with the old caravan units in including fridge, oven, sink, hob etc it is coming in at 5420 without any horses or tack on board, we will only travel 2 - one is 680kg and the other is 600kg so can do without adding too much more weight as just that lot is 6700 and you can soon start adding when feed/water/saddles and all the kit and kaboodle that goes with it!
We have got a 54 plate Autotrail and would ideally like the furniture similar to that.

Hmmm wonder if hubby would notice if I stole them from there!
Think I may be in trouble though :tears:

Chatter - we have most of what we need, horse area done and toilet compartment we are upgrading! Have got new hob and sink and are keeping the oven and fridge so it is the overhead cupbards and a run of 1400 base units only and worktop but have hit a stop now!

Wildman - It is a 7500kg and definitely a PHGV so we are ok. Thanks for checking though

Maximum authorised mass:

If the vehicle has a maximum authorised mass, which exceeds 3.5 tonnes, but not 7.5 tonnes then a category C1 licence is needed. If the maximum authorised mass exceeds 7.5 tonnes then a category C licence is needed.

maximum authorised mass ('MAM') which exceeds 3.5 tonnes but not 7.5
tonnes then a category C1 licence is needed. If the MAM exceeds 7.5 tonnes
then a category C licence is required.

Yes we have both got class C1 on our license.
The lorry is 7500kg so we are ok

Be Very carefull on weight VOSA are aware that many 7.5ton horse box's with two horses on board are overloaded and they are a prime target to pull in.

Do your sums and don't forget to add in the weight of the crew water as well as feed and tack.

We are training so many people for Cat C for horse box's now it's unreal and some of the stories they are telling us about being pulled has shocked me.

Hi Sneezles,if you hubby is handy it is very easy to make your own units :thumb:Make frames from 2 x1 and cover with ply from either O'learys or Magnum (they have pre finished boards (veneered) or you can buy sheets of normal ply and a router to cut out the openings (not a lot left) and again cover this with the finished boards :thumb::thumb:Making draws ? it is easier to buy from B&Q etc, and easy to cut them to fit if you can not fit straight in.:thumb:You can make or cheaper to buy doors made to measure :thumb:Have a look at ours :thumb: if you want I can find the name of the suppliers ?

Motor roamin - Yes it weighed 5420kg with full water and half tank of diesel and fridge,hob,oven and old cupboards onboard. Horses we have weigh 680kg and 620kg odd so even with the tack etc we are well under but don't want to put heavy new units in it so that we are borderline.
