Just bought an Auto Trail Scout 2.8, (out first motor home) signed receipt which said sold as seen. It's a 2001 and cost me £20000 from a private seller.
I/ve noticed that occasionally the clutch slips but only in 5th gear, climbs up a steep hill from a standing start without slipping. I contacted the seller and he said it's been like that for 18 months just occasionally slipping in 5th gear, Any suggestions would be much appriciated.

thanks
Chris

Forgot to add Engine has done 41000

How many miles has it done Chris and have you any receipts for any clutch work done in the past?

Is the clutch slip in 5th up a gradient or on the flat?

it's done 41000, no suggestion that any work has been done on the clutch, its slips on the flat, could it be I'm changing to 5th too soon?

Maybe Chris....

Does it slip in any other gears up an incline?

Perhaps the pressure plate is getting "tired" or the friction plate is worn?

41000 seems a lot for a clutch on a Motorhome. How much for renewal?

If it smells hot after a run perhaps it's time to look at renewing for peace of mind?

Doesn't slip i any other gear, not sure how much a new clutch is, it's going in next week to have a service and a cam belt fitted, looks like the bill is going to double, although I've no idea how much a new clutch will be.
Oh forgot to add it doesn't smell!

Chris

I'm sure there will be someone along soon who has had the same issue with the clutch on a similar motorhome.

I remember there were some issues with clutch judder on some models.

Best get other opinions / information on this and make a few enquiries?:thumb:

If it does come to replacement I always ask to see the old parts just to re-assure me the job needed doing and parts replaced as necessary.

If it doesn't slip all the time it could be oil leaking from the rear main oil seal.
Check around bellhousing to see if any signs of oil.
If oil needs topping up regularly its definite.

Ive got a SCOUT with the 2.8jtd and five speed box, its a 2005 with just 12k miles, Ive never noticed any slip in the clutch, it pulls well from lowish speeds in 5th.

Had the cam belt and followers done last year with a full service around £375 iirc

dont forget to have followers done at the same time as the belt.

only problems Ive really had is the rear lights tend to fill up with water,

Good luck with your scout the layouts fine for the english weather.

If the clutch is non ajustable and slipping on a hill I would think that either the pressure plate springs have gone weak or the friction plate is worn, either way thats a new cluth required.

You can try driving it on a flat road when in top gear at 35 to 40mph dip the clutch without releasing the accelerator then release the clucth and see if it slips then if it does new clutch needed.

Good luck Rick

Since 20 September 10!
Put the vehicle in second gear, handbrake on. Slowly let the clutch out. If it stalls clutch could be OK. Do the same after a run when it's hot.

i assume you mean tensioner and guide pulleys....not cam followers.

if it is clutch slip, it certainly hasnt been doing it for 18 months :Eeek:

once it starts to slip ALL clutch use will accelerate the wear.

think the previous owner was telling a little porky.

I would agree with that, though it might have only done 100 miles in 18 months who knows, only the liar who sold it.

All the best Rick

That's why my diagnosis was oil on clutchplate, wouldn't have lasted this long with that amount of wear.
A slightly leaking seal will allow clutchslip when hot and a drop of oil gets on the pressure plate.

It's not a lot of help to you but the reason it slips in 5th is because that loads the clutch more than lower gears.

You need a good garage to do some checking.

Cam Belt Change

I had the clutch changed on our van at 17000 miles. Fiat picked up the bill.

Before you start worrying about worn and leaking rear main bearings, look for the obvious.
KISS --- Keep it simple
Is the clutch adjustable, and if so is there free travel at the peddle at the begging of its movement. If not adjust it so that it has. If the clutch is 'coming' to the end of its servisible life, don't let the engine labour in low revs in the 5th gear. Keep the mill spinning before you hit 5th. If it slips in lower gears, chances are its shot and needs changing. If you change it early so you don't burn the presure plate you may get away with only changing the clutch plate. You can only make that choice after it is stripped and examining the presure plate. Good luck :thumb:
