I have the older type with display and bluetooth but I never use the display. If the smart one had been available I would have opted for it.

Not got the shunt (no need with my battery), but have one of the smart Victron inverters. The app is really good (y)

I have the older one with Bluetooth. This is intended and facilitates the use of smart ve network. But not limited to. It can communicate with batt sense, solar charger and smart inverters. It’s also handy when integrated with GX panel and no more ve direct port available. The communication will be done via ve network.

Yes, I installed one this weekend and having previously used the BMV 700, I much prefer the smart shunt giving me all the data I need (y)

The install was very straight forward without having to consider where the display should go.
Settings menu is very simple via the app.
From box to showing data on the phone was completed within 45 minutes.
Good price for a Victron battery monitor

Trying to think of a negative..... The shunt connection is via 10mm bolts and the factory original wiring on my MH had an 8mm ring which I hadn't accounted for

Ooh, that looks nice!

I’ve a “traditional” battery monitor with digital display in my boat and I find it really useful to monitor my leisure bank (capacity, current draw, time to charge, time to deplete etc).

I take it Smartshunt and App gives you all those stats?

And more, it can measure current down to 50ma both ways. Very important as a coulomb counter as it registers very accurate the state of charge, time to go, and amps consumed. Also ah that you need to put back.

There's two minor differences that probably are not used much in MHs. The BMVs have an audible/visual alarm, and a relay that can be used to isolate the battery for protection, or start a generator automatically.

I just ordered a BMV last week, would have got one of these instead if I'd known. :(

That's how I came across it, looking for a BMV, £128 delivered seems a good price.

I bought a Victron BMV because it was the only one that I could find that allowed for efficiency and Peukert’s exponent etc.

I'm no expert but both of these values can be adjusted accordingly within the setup options of the Smartshunt dependant on the type of batteries you have.

I am not doubting it, just explaining why I chose Victron. There is one make of battery monitor that shows an impossible 105% charge because it can’t cope with batteries needing more charge in than you take out.

Sorry, I had misunderstood you thinking that was the reason you opted for the BMV rather than the Smartshunt (y)

No problem, it doesn’t hurt to clarify these things. (y)

I have just noticed the updated app seems to have new settings for the BMV7xx range as well, making the display even more redundant.

I dont know how this BMV works but Peukerts 'constant' isnt constant and varies from battery to battery and with age and temperature. I think I will pass on that

The BMV range allows you to adjust the Peukert’s exponent to the appropriate level for your battery. They suggest the default of 1.25 will be appropriate for most lead acid batteries but 1.05 is sufficient for LiFePO4. A perfect battery would be 1 but they don’t exist.

If anyone is wondering what Mr Peukert was on about it is that the if you bang 50 Amps out of a lead acid battery you have a lot fewer Amp hours available than if you drain it slowly at 1 Amp. If you want your battery monitor to give you an accurate reading of what you have used/left then it needs to take Peukert’s exponent into account.

After reading through the manual, the Victron does this and even synchronises itself with the battery on a regular basis to give accurate state of charge information. It can also monitor the voltage of the starter battery.

Am I the only person who prefers a dedicated display? I have a smartphone but don't want to open an app just to check on my battery. I go to my control panel to check on everything else I need to monitor so I'm looking at it on a regular basis. The Victron display is noted every time I'm checking water levels, etc so no extra effort (or display) is needed.
