Just been looking at Ridgeset RV's website after reading another post and I was wondering if anyone has a list of RV dealer's that have simular stock in? IE not everything over 50K

I am just browsing at the moment but could fancy an RV in the future if things work out. I would probally want to keep under 7.5 tonne and 28' . Must be a derv though, mabe a C Class might be better for us?

I love my big V8, but.. LPG is too thin on the ground and when you do find it, its poorly placed at the pumps. I am doing at least 10,000 miles a year so I am sure my next rig will be a smelly lumpy diesel, but my wallet will be fatter because of it. Anyway Diesels go on and on as well don't they? They just do not sound as nice along the way, I will miss that.

I have already been on your website. Linda.

BTW. I would like a V8 or V10 petrol ( I can still remember the soiund of my dads Range Rover) but I am not keen on LPG and like the idea of 15mpg better than >9mpg.

Not all V10 petrol RVs do 9mpg, 13-14 is nearer the mark, depending on the wight of your right foot :winky:

Nah can't agree with that one my Trusty V8 Powerstroke 7.3 ltr Turbo Diesel has never missed a beat in the last 2 years and runs so smoothly people think its a petrol engine and are gobsmacked when they realise its a diesel.

if you have to put the price of an LPG conversion on top of the price of your van, thats one hell of a lot of diesel.

Thanks for the links, it's kept me busy for a while. We have just spent a wet weekend away in our Hymer and with all of us in it ( 2 kids 12 &15, our lass and the labrador) it has shrunk since we got it, Honest! It was ok in the summer but in the winter the extra space of an RV would be nice.

We are (sorry I am) :winky:(SWMBO is not too keen) just thinking at the moment, but the Hymer is only 6 months old so we will probably lose too much money at the moment.

As for Petrol Vs Derv , would a 28' C class petrol do 14+mpg?

Hi Richard

In answer to your question, we have had 3 Coachmen Catalina 28ft C Class RVs based on a Ford Triton V10, all have averaged 14.6mpg driven sensibly on motorway runs. Towing they would achieve region of 13mpg.

We currently run a 28ft 7.4ltr Chevy based Dutchmen C Class which averages around 13-14 on a run, towing (as in our fully laden parts trailer) it achieves around 12mpg.

By comparison we have an English 2.4TD Ford Ranger crewcab truck which, towing the trailer unladen, only manages 17mpg .

Hope this helps

And if you take those MPG's and the cost of LPG (which is readily available) you get the equivalent of 26 - 28 mpg and that lovely V8 burble.... if you are going to buy an American diesel you need to be loaded

Still have to disagree, you do not need to be loaded to buy an american diesel.....

at the end of the day if it comes down to MPG as the deciding factor in your purchase, you cant afford it......

He did, and then had to spend I believe around two grand on it, steering box is one item I remember. The insurance backed guarantee you get from them, I believe Keith said was good for wiping your bum on.

Hey - not fair - Linda has always been linked to the BPG website - under the 'Goods and Services' section of RV Links. :thumb:

I thought that was the major part of her business when I constructed the page so that is why she is in that section. I will proceed to make amends immediately BUT.....

having just checked Linda's site, I find this is a one-sided love affair!:cry::cry:

Sorry, gone off thread......

 Yes. I agree about the insurance backed guarantee. Perhaps the below link may shed some light on the problems that we had with our 1988 Coachmen Classic?

Don't go messing with your site though as I doubt we will be shipping any more RVs for a while

Me I'd have a Big Yank Petrol v8/v10 any day.I am biased and I love em. Bulletproof, GREAT SOUND and with similar MPG and diesel more expensive, I'm going for LPG.The Triton motor does it for me.

 Must agree that LPG is my scene too. The Minnie Winnie we had for a short while did 13/15 mpg. Although our Newmar only does 8/9 mpg. Perhaps if we were not so heavily laden, it would be better. :ROFLMAO:

Well we have only had two RVs and they have both been diesel, 6.5ltr Chevy V8 diesels at that. The first one in Rocky (30 foot, 6.75 tons) was really quick and sounded wonderful, very powerful and had no real issues (Geo said that he had trouble keeping up with me in France with his Ford V10 Triton :Eeek:) We regularly achieved 14-15 MPG, which I think is acceptable (Ford V10 on the same run but towing a small car got 10.5). The new RV has the same engine but at the back and sounds totally different (read awesome :roflmto:) but seems to have less power than Rocky, have only driven it a couple of hundred miles so far so haven't really got familiar with it yet though.......
Different feel to a diesel motor, tons of power and torque but not as lively as a V10, but the suits an RV better in my opinion, unless you intend joining Richard Hammond and go into RV racing :roflmto::roflmto:
We did get Rocky from Castle Motors and we did spend a fortune on it, actually over £4K in the end up including a much needed service, new steering box and power booster for the steering/brakes.... and a host of other bits that it NEEDED. We then spent a fortune on things which we wanted :Eeek: The warranty was useless and I wouldn't wipe my bum with it as it was far to sharp and would have done irreparable damage :ROFLMAO:
Would I buy from them again????? Possibly not, but who knows. I would certainly have both eyes wide open next time though.
Good luck in your search and do not be afraid to ask as many questions as you have to, folks on here just love helping out........

Hi Dave

Assuming you've checked/changed the plugs and air filter during the service, it could be a inlet valve deposits which can restrict the flow of air into the engine which will affect the air/fuel ratio, leading to reduced power and slower acceleration, as well as uneven running when the engine is cold.. or burned exhaust valves ..
The former can be treated with fuel additives such as STP which are designed to clean the injectors, inlet valves, combustion chambers etc, the later would need to have the heads off and valves re ground, a compression check would help to diagnose..
Just my thoughts, I'm not an engine mechanic, lets see what the others think.. maybe start a new post to get more attention .. ?

Thanks for all the info so far. I am just thinking at the moment and as our current M/H is still quiet new a change might not be on the cards for a year or two yet. But as most of us do from time time on a winters night I like to have a look at what is for sale.

I am the only one that does this?

I start looking at normall RV's the ones I might be able to afford and then all of a sudden I am looking at the mega stuff for 100K +. Must learn not to do it as when you come back to reality the one's I could afford all look a bit basic for a bit.

On the subject of MPG and Petrol Vs Derv, how do you all get you MPG figures? Do you start with a full tank and then do say a 300 mile trip fill it back up, then diving the litres used by 4.55, then divide the trip milage by the gallons used.

I have just been comparing costs for fuel and it is not as bad as I thought if an RV can do 14+mpg. But at 10mpg it is a bit of a worry.

Miles Fuel MPG Galls Litres £ / Litre Total Cost
5000 Pet 10 500.00 2275.00 1.02 £2,320.50
5000 Pet 12 416.67 1895.83 1.02 £1,933.75
5000 Pet 14 357.14 1625.00 1.02 £1,657.50
5000 Derv 14 357.14 1625.00 1.07 £1,738.75
5000 Derv 16 312.50 1421.88 1.07 £1,521.41
5000 Derv 28 178.57 812.50 1.07 £869.38
