I picked this up on BT Yahoo home page, interesting for the future :thumb:

19p a litre 'petrol' in development
A British company has invented artificial petrol that emits no greenhouse gases and could cost as little as 19p per litre at the pumps.

Cella Energy, the Oxfordshire-based firm that is developing the fuel, uses hydrogen, which is currently much cheaper than oil.

The first road tests of the as yet unnamed fuel are scheduled to take place next year. If everything goes to plan, then the miracle 'petrol' could be available in three to five years.

Though a figure of 19p per litre has been suggested, it is expected that the motorist would pay around 60p per litre with the addition of Government fuel tax.

Even so, that would reduce the price of filling up a 70-litre petrol tank to £42.

Speaking to the 'Daily Mail', chief executive of Cella Energy, Stephen Voller, said: 'In some senses, hydrogen is the perfect fuel. It has three times more energy than petrol per unit of weight, and when it burns, it produces nothing but water.'

He also said that the fuel could be used in existing cars without the need for engine modifications: 'Early indications are that the micro-beads can be used in existing vehicles without engine modification. The materials are hydrogen-based, and so when used produce no carbon emissions at the point of use, in a similar way to electric vehicles.'

Critics remain sceptical of the real world savings, though. AA president Edmund King commented: 'The fact the hydrogen is cheaper now doesn't mean it always will be because the Government would soon get its hands on it and increase the tax.'

an (oil) pipe dream .. ?

one of the oil giants will buy the patent then bury it and even if it were to happen, fuel tax and VAT would still be levied at the current rate for petrol, we are screwed either way

we are over the proverbial barrel

don't think it will run a diesel engine.

It has to come for the future , oil and its pollution of the environment is not forever

Indeed not .. but it won't ever be 19p lt .. not unless we can 'home brew' :roflmto:

Absolutely - and only residents of cloud cuckoo land will believe that governments won't tax it to make up for the revenue lost from tax on other fuel types.

Two things that I would like to point out:

1. If true this would reduce our need of purchasing oil from the middle east or wherever - really good thing, in my humble opinion.

2. If we are going to produce this fuel based on hydrogen and it is going to save the Nation - where is all the Hydrogen going to come from?

Supply and demand springs to mind here. Diesel engined users have had the option of using bio fuels for years, problem is that used cooking oil has gone up by more than 20p per liter in the last few months.
Restraints are still producing the same amount of waste oil so why has it gone up....becouse more people are using it.

where is all the Hydrogen going to come from?

A detail they will overlook until it's too late, probably.

Sounds a bit like snake oil here, micro beads of hydrogen ? To use hydrogen in a car they compress it to very silly pressures to get enough storage, I can't picture a "micro bead" holding hydrogen at 1000bar.

But if it does this guy will make Bill Gates look like a beggar.

Electric is The Way, perfect conversion from energy to torque without 80% leaving via the exhaust pipe.

Stephen is the guy who was running a company developing a hydrogen fuel cell until it went to the wall. So he or his company should know a lot about hydrogen, but maybe not business?

Not convinced about electricity, heavy expensive batteries, short range, long charging times , a bit like wind turbines , nice idea but the technology has a long way to go.

Hydrogen can be made from water, the current problem is the energy usage required to get the hydrogen from water and as Hildweller points out, storage problems.

It is possible to store hydrogen in bricks, a technology invented by the Danish company Amminex, but the hydrogen storage technology is not commercially viable yet.

Quite a way off for sure but it is The Way I'm sure.

Many researchers around the world are investigating methods of storing hydrogen, mico pellets are one of the systems. The pellets are made of a substance that absorbs hydrogen under pressure, and then releases it when heated.

Similar way in which acetylene has been stored for years in acetylene bottles, not as a gas but in absorbed into acetone.
