My Hymer has an all up of 3400kg, What is the up-rating procedure. Is it just a paper excercise to get it uprated to 3800kg or will there be work to do as well?

I had the CI uprated to 3750 by SV Tech and it was just a paper exercise. A few pics of the side of the van was all they wanted along with the tyre rating. However I did have Airide fitted and that helps. Cost about £400, cant remember the exact cost. Road tax has been reduced to £156 pa and no change in the MOT Class.

Hi Jim,
Had the Dethleffs up-rated a couple of years ago.

Here's the link to SVTech.

Link Removed

In our case it was just a paper exercise and a trip to the local DVLA place.

Worth a phone call and they'll tell you exactly what they need from you - it will probably include the details from the engine plate (not the conversion plate) i.e. VIN, all the axle weights, any other weird looking numbers on it.

Good crowd. Very helpful.

Interesting.

Has anyone uprated an Elddis Autoquest 100/Compass Avantgarde 100?

The plated MTPLM is 2900kgs but I'm sure I've read somewhere that some 2 litre Boxers can be up to 3300kgs.

Just uprated ours before we left for the winter, SV tech said to take it from 3500 to 3700 no change to van but if you want 3850 Air Ride would have to be fitted.

Do SVA do anything apart from knowing their way round the forms, and providing a replacement info plate ?

I'm not knocking, as they do seem to provide an excellent service, but if you can give some documentary proof that, for example, other versions of your basic vehicle, say a Fiat Ducato, are plated at a higher weight but have the same suspension, brakes etc, has anyone done it for themself?

Second, is there any advantage in plating to, say 3499 kg, in case now, or at some time in the future or in some places, 3,500kg is the starting point of the next lot of rules, rather than the finishing point as is the case today in the UK?

up plating

Hi Jim,

We up-plated our motorhome last year, Cost £282.00 Svtech did all the paperwork, I answered a couple of easy questions, no photos required, just chassis, tyres and suspension details.
Well worth the effort and expense. :thumb:

Hi Jim, SVT route is the easiest. They have tested most models and provide your new Plate and Certificate needed by DVLA for uprating. Just done Dethlefffs Ford from 3850 to 4200 as paper exercise.

Word of advice DO NOT SEND LOGBOOK to Swansea but visit any local DVLA for new Log Book, They quote 6wk turnaround and then still get it all wrong.:winky:

tyre load rating plays a big part in uprating but new higher rated 15" tyres are a bloody lot cheaper than 19.5" or 22" tyres

usually brakes and chassis are ok.

Weight versus driving age??

Hi,

We are always conscious of the wieght of our motorhome and would like to uprate from 3500 to 3800. It is a Startrail on an Alco chassis.

I have been reading info on the 'dark side' and this seems an easy operation through SvTech.

My question is, as I am nearing 70 will the fact that I have gone up to 3800 have an impact on driving the motorhome? Does anyone know the rules or can advise where I can find out please??

I dont want to put up the weight and then find I cant drive in a couple of years time without jumping through a load of medical hoops.

Mike

Hi, Can you explain why the Road tax has been reduced? Is that because of the Airide or the uprating?

As the uprate took the van over 3500kg, it is now classed as a PHGV - Private HGV

Mike

You will need to have a private medical at 70 to retain your full license-if you don't do this you would need to take a test if you,at a later date, wanted to drive a vehicle over 3.5 t
You will need that medical every 3 yrs.It can cost anything from £90 to £130 so shop around. My GP charges £130,so I go to a 'Private Practice' surgery and pay £90.
There's a form you can download and take to the surgery-it's all on the DVLA site

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/index.htm

Good luck,Mike.

Hi Jim,

Rory is right. With the help of VOSA, I did do it on my own initially at a quoted price of £27.00, (then they refunded me £12 ) and VOSA also issued me with a Vehicle Design Weight Certificate, recognised by any Traffic Enforcement Agency in the EU. This is despite MHs being exempt.

The important thing is though, this was done for me because I had an EU Type Approved front suspension upgrade done at Goldschmitt Techmobil AG, (to improve the wallowy handling), and had a TUV approved engineers report to support the upgrade. That would be the same as you having the Air Rides fitted, and then the uprate in plating by SVTech.
What annoyed me about SVTech, was that they totally dismissed my suspension upgrade, and would only uprate on the rear axles, for which they wanted £320 to supply documentation and a new plate, so I went in person to VOSA. Hymer AG charged €67 for the new (stick on) plate. :whatthe:

We have gone from a GVW of 4,500Kgs to 5,000Kgs.

Cheers,

Jock.
