Hi all
Am planning a trip a trip to Scotland beginning May for about 3 weeks before meeting up with the funsters at Misterton .
Was wondering if any of you can recomend sites or must sees that you have found on your travels .I have not been to Scotland for over 50 yrs.
Do you think I might be lucky enough to see the Loch Ness monster ?

We saw the Falkirk Wheel last year and were really impressed. We also went for a boat ride on it. Not to be missed.

I'm almost embarrased to say that I have never been to Scotland, I have lived and worked in many countries, just never got up there, :Blush: maybe next year.

We have plenty of Funsters who live and visit Scotland so I'm sure you'll have some reccomendations soon:thumb:

Couple of randoms from our brief trip last year....

Oban, into town, follow ferry sign and you pick up camp site signs, two off, one shows to the left, ignor and follow road along the coast. Virtually at the end, about 3 miles, loverly site, awsome views. Taxi's will come and take you to town, if you don't fancy the walk and back, can't remember the price but not expensive and dogs welcome:thumb:

Glencoe, spectacular, plenty of places to stop in a MH for a walk, lunch or just to take in the scenery. We ended up at the C&CC Glencoe site, very nice, views everywhere, mind you noisy bloomin cookoooh: Gentle walk part through woods and part pavement into village and the hotel bar does good food and takes dogs, and if the weathers nice, we got sunburnt on our trip, yes Scotland and sunburn in one scentence, they have a nice terrace you can sit and watch the world go by and look over the water (forgotten what it's called:Blush.

Fort William likes motorhomes, £1.50 to park all day and plenty of parking about including easy carpark next to Morrisons.

We also went to Luss, not much to do town wise more about Loch Lomand, though the perculiar looking reteraunt, looks more like a cafe come town hall type place turned out to do rather nice food, oh and beer, Oban brewed stuff, mmm, very nice:thumb:

Isle of Skye .. a must, awesome scenery, several sites and plenty of good overnight stopping places. My favorite site is at Glen Brittle, right on the beach with fabulous views of the mountains .. also worth a visit is Coral Beach.

Isle of Arran. ... Scotland in miniature, ferry from Ardrossan then cross from Lochranza to Mull of Kintyre .. two or three sites and several good overnight stopping places. Standing stones, distillery, candle factory, Kings caves .. and much more.

Second Jim's vote for Skye. Absolutely beautiful. There's a campsite at Dunvegan called Kinloch where we stayed for a couple of nights; we were pitched right on the edge of the Loch. Dunvegan itself is quiet (no casino or night club ), but there are a couple of places to eat and have a drink, and there's some good walking to be had there. Make sure you drive up around the Trotternish Peninsule via Uig; then if you want a really spectacular walk try the Quiraing. When we were 'doing' Skye we stayed at the caravan site in Staffin and the warden, Darren, took us on a guided walk up there. Portree is a pretty town with a few decent shops and good walks. Of course the Cuillin Hills are the most obvious landmark with lots of Scenery.
The Applecross Peninsula, which is on the mainland just across from northern Skye is a lovely place to be. The drive over the top to Applecross is a bit demanding but quite doable unless you're huge or towing, and the views are well worth the effort. The road around the north of the peninsula is a good route out for seeing Wester Ross and northwards.
Three weeks though is not going to be long enough to do justice to Scotland. We spent 6 weeks and only saw a fraction of what there was to see. Still there will be other years.

Have been going to Scotland for years now it is a magical place.

It's hard to recommend any places they are all good, agree Skye is a must, also I like the central route, Glen Coe another place worth a visit, any of the west coast as you see in three weeks you can only scratch the surface. Beware Scotland has a habit of grabbing hold of you and it's a job to pull free.

Link RemovedWe too spent 4 wonderful weeks touring scotland before the midges got there, unfortunately missed the isle of skye as our engine packed up after only 2 weeks and had to make a detour to Edinborough to a fiat to get the engine remapped.
Would go there again to look at things we missed and yes we did see nessie on the boat trip that we had on Loch Ness
will put a picture on when I know how, Jim has told me but I am in the middle of the jobbie!!!:Cool:

Indeed, well worth a visit .. :thumb:

Portree has a good sized free car park that the coaches terminate at it so it can accommodate the largest MH / RV .
For stocking up there is a large supermarket and an outdoors equipment shop that sell among other stuff, full body midge suits, no joking... we bought head nets, but this was in Aug. height of the midge season. It's on the outskirts on the A87 heading north.
Just remember to fuel up before crossing the bridge, nuff said. and Sunday is still very much observed.. most shops are closed.

Skye is a lot busier since they removed the toll on the bridge..

I love the A9. Sort of Alpine in parts. Must see the Queen Victoria observation point and the salmon ladder:

Then on up the Whisky trail to Grantown on Spee. Do the area which includes the Cairngorm Park and railway.

Now close to Inverness. We hired a boat for a week on Loch Ness, failed to see Nessie.

Back down to Deeside and Balmoral.

Have a look at Aberdeen, granite city.

This doesn't knit in well with the west coast but could miss Aberdeen and head to Breamar over Glen Shee keeping a camera ready for deer. Then head for the west.

I'll be doing the A9 in March, up there working, can't wait. I just hope there's no snow.

Hi have to agree with most about skye lovely place stayed there for 3 nights in 2009.
Scotland is a bit bigger than folk think so there is loads to do and see and all depends what you like. Alot of people when coming to Scotland forget about Dumfries and Galloway (i live in dfs) it is ideal for mh loads of campsites and loads of wildcamping which police dont mind as long as you are being sensible.
If you fancy a city break then cc have a site on outskirts of Edinburgh about 10min walk from bus stop,also 2 nice cl if you prefer them.
If your doing the east coast then fife is great with some really nice fishing villages agian loads of sites and wildcamping places and if you like golf you will be in heaven.

Beutiful relaxing drive

Hi If you visit Fort William have a drive up the A830 to Malliag ,it was a really outstanding drive with bright blue water and real sandy beaches,loads of pull ins.:thumb::thumb:

Hi clarify,

If you are going up the east side of scotland, call in at Helmsdale just off the A9 going to Wick. Go down to the harbour and there is at least 3 large bays and extra long car spaces right on the harbour side you can park for free overnight. Across the road is the tourist information office which doubles as a fantastic craft and souvenir shop, and up in the village a fantastic fish and chip shop with fish the size of a whale ( typical fishermans remark) freshly cooked to order.

Have a good trip and see you at Misterton
