Anyone had the transmision brake apart on an RV???
I stupidly drove the RV about 20 miles last week with the parking brake on,its the one you push down with your foot.
The brake is on the propshaft and becouse of this stupid mistake on my part it now goes to the floor when applied.
There is no tranny lock on the gearbox, only the propshaft brake,so as you can see I have a problem.
Its the John Deere chassis which is the same as the Oshkosh.
If the shoes are destroyed does anyone know a company that will reline them,I used to get truck shoes relined but have been out of the job for some time now,and have lost the contacts.

Thanks for that Geo,there is an agent localy, rang em and was told they will have to send them away"health and safety".
Have you ever pulled one to pieces, I think they are similar to the old Land Rover handbrake.

Not hard to do

Used to have to do a land rover from time to time.. I think you will find them similar... Used to rerivit them my self... I used to take them apart while still on the prop shaft.. I expect the RV will be similar.. May need new springs.. Just a reversed wheel brake pulling on rather than off if i remember, I Had them on my old dodge titan A class

If I was starting off on the road I would have noticed, but was pulling out of a farm up hill on a dirt track for over half a mile and like you say...too much grunt and all tanks empty.By the time I had got to the main road the damage was done.

I got some imperial size set of spanners at B&Q

I recently got a set of 8 spanners from B&Q ..£15.99... Loads on eBay.. drapper do them and some other makers. Like some of you still have some of my old tools sockets and spanners ..a must for the jobs on an RV

Never dispose of tools you may well need them someday .. Try expaining why you need to buy more when the RV is maintained by a workshop to SHMBO...

previous owner of my Rv did the same trick Dave.....in portugal :Eeek:

he did do a few more miles than you though....100 or so.

completely destroyed the shoes and burnt the drum blue.

had to have a full rebuild with new shoes, drum, springs and anything else it needed....several hundred euro's :Eeek:

got the reciept in the RV somewhere and around €400 if i remember correctly.

after that he made an 'idiot' card to clip to the steering wheel....along with one for the antenna.

WARNING !

HANDBRAKE ON !!

Still use them myself :thumb:

Remember going down the A5 on a night trunk in a TS3 stroker...just like the afterburner on a rocket when it was decoking itself...happy days.
70 MPH no problem. If I remember right, they were prone to starting up in reverse and also overrunning the governer and self destructing. Dangerous trucks those Commers, but at least you could hear em coming.

Park brake problem

If you look at the drum you will find a small oblong cover that you can prise out, make sure this is at the top and then you will be able to put a small screwdriver through the gap and turn the star wheel round moving the screwdriver end nearest to you down to push the star wheel up. If you find that your shoes are shot, send them to us and we will re line them for you, if the drums need skimming we can do that and then supply oversize lining material, worst way round the drum could be given a liner to take out the damage provided there is enough meat left on the actual drum itself. Hope the adjustment works as it cheaper and easier. If for whatever reason the slot is not in your drum, try looking at the rear on the backplate for the slot. Kindest regards, Simon

My little man sorted it for me in the end...handy little chap.
Grand total of £45, but that did include fitting some new marker lights, fixing the automatic step and fixing a sticking accelerator...most watch him hes getting a bit pricey:Smile:
