Hi Everyone

My son and his wife have been looking at their options for a first motorhome, and are considering a truck camper on a European style pick-up. Having considered the three basic options available (buying a small motorhome, converting a van, and a truck camper), it seems on the long run that a truck camper will probably come out cheaper than the other options due to only having to insure one vehicle. Here are my thoughts on insurance - because Nigel is under 25, insurance is an issue and one of the main reasons behind the thinking of getting a truck camper. Rather than paying a large amount for an every day car as well as insurance for a motorhome, he will be for just one vehicle. Nigel is already paying close to £1.5k a year for a Vauxhall Astra and will probably pay close or more for a motorhome, but will most probably pay less than these two combined if he was to get a pick-up. Plus there is the maintenance/tax of one vehicle over two vehicles.

Can anyone point to a good place to look at second-hand truck campers?

Does anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks for any advice,

Rog

There are plenty on auction sites. You will need to tell the insurer that it will be having a body added onto it, as they may see it as a modification. You will have to make sure payload is not exceeded as well!

Cheap body that needs some love - gives you a better choice when looking for a pick up!

Or look at a bambi, which would be cheap insurance too!

We hired a truck camper once for a couple of weeks in Canada and loved it.

Niche Marketing do them.

We've often looked at them at the shows and would love one as an alternative to taking the 5er sometimes.

Rog do you mean a converted Truck
Or what is known as a demountable ie a pick up that you can drop the body off
In any case Insurance for an under 25 is going to be a nightmare get the company and quotes first
Most wont touch an under 25
Nige and Pam (Sundowners have a demountable as well as a 5th whell they may know more)

Geo, he's looking at a demountable. Because then he only has to insure one vehicle.

Then he may well have age related insurance problems
insuring as a pick no probs, but failing to notify of the camper element and treating it as a load may well cause greif if a claim is reqd
Id try NFU for Insurance
