Spotted in my Garden today (1 Viewer)

Spotted this in my garden this morning.

I'm in Neath in South Wales, 500 odd ft up a hill. Not far from the coast.

Its a waxwing. Never seen them this far south and west before.

Does it mean the weather has been unkind up north then ?

aaww beautiful Peter.

We had a woodpecker visit ours but I wasnt quick enough with the camera.

We used to have loads of woodpeckers until building works took place 4 years ago and its the first one I have seen so am hoping they are returning finally.

You got some rowen berries close Peter??

Not Rowan berries, but lots of cotoneasters and some holly.
But I believe they are fruit eaters etc. so put out some chopped dates, prunes, apricots and apple for them. (Mostly left overs from making the Christmas Puddings) Yes I did soak the fruit to soften it.

Been back a few times, only the one i think but can hold its own in a scrap with teh starlings and wagtails etc.

rescued a Pheasant once.

I was at my sisters in Essex, been making Sloe Gin.
DEcanted off the spirit etc and wondered what to do with the berries.

Chucked them on compost heap.

Few hours later a stray hen pheasant, staggers through the garden and falls over.

Rescued her before the cats could get there and put her in a box in the potting shed.

Was right as ninepence next day but I think somewhat hung over.

Many moons ago I used to make my own wine. After making some rice n raisin wine I threw a handful of the rice on the garden. I have never seen so many pi**ed sparrows. The following day they were all sat on the fence waiting for the next feed.

I had a friend in Ireland who used to soak corn in whiskey, lay it on the ground and wait for the pheasants to eat it, when they did they would fall over and were unable to get up again, he would pick them up and 'despatch them'.....
