farmers fishermen and emergency services and planners will all benefit from the upgrade. You me and the ordinary folk benefit as we can plan our breaks. We all get the weather forecast for free.

Not exactly for free if you are a taxpayer, however that was not my barbed point.

Would hate to think about the amount of days I have cancelled concrete at work over the years due to dodgy weather forecasting!!

I cannot see this new system being any better, best weather forecasting I have seen is in the States they tell you A time when it’s going to rain and were pretty much spot on most of the time.

At the moment I just look out the window and have a look as it’s more reliable

It’s free at the point of use 60 million people in the UK that’s £1.61 per head per year (assuming 8 years use) or 20p per year per person for 8 years.

so the barbed point is ?

Not entirely true again, the aviation industry pays for access, however maybe its too early on a Monday for the point.

The Met Office makes money, they even sell data to the Chinese. The new computer is just to replace the old one which reaches the end of its design life in a couple of years.

And it's needed because of the challenge of global warming. The warmer atmosphere has more energy and as a result it becomes more chaotic and harder to predict.:)

Folk have short memories. The 1987 "hurricane" was poorly forecast but we knew about storm Dennis a week ago and the impact of it was accurately forecast.

I think it's a good idea to keep up to date maybe some people are against it as it means they will have less chance to complain about the forecast being wrong!!!

The BBC report says £1.2 Billion!
I cannot begin to imagine how it can cost so much.

We are a country set on the edge of a weather active ocean.

Forecasting is easier and more predictable for a large land mass.

I also feel that it is easy to remember the times when the weather does not go as forecast and as easy to forget when it is correct.

I also believe that often the forecast is often correct but it is the timing is wrong.

The amount of money in the great scheme of government budgets is not so large, and it is likely to help as permutations of weather increase with Climate Change.

If they do need it as it would be a government project they should get a pay on delivery quotes if it didn't work we shouldn't pay and only the quoted price

Its not the teenager its the ones pulling the strings that are the threat , and they are just as dangerous as the
ideology they promulgate if it was true .
Communism, socialism, and capitalism are ideologies. I think the people of Calder Valley cleaning up after their third “100 year event” in 4 years might give it a practical name not one based on theory. Some of us see it as a dangerous reality.

I can never understand how buying a super dooper computer makes the forecast more accurate. Unless you upgrade the programmers to superhumans, do you not just get the same answer much quicker?
They have a model of the atmosphere, which is a fluid, albeit with clouds in and stuff. I'm not sure how they model this but I do know from long ago when I studied finite element analysis when I was taught by people who had known Newton that it takes a lot of sums. In finite element analysis you model a solid structure or say a bridge and consider each element as a separate beam. For solids you create a 3D lattice of beams which is the same shape as the solid. Even a simple model could have several hundred "beams" and when you apply a force to the structure the model works out how this interlinked system reacts.

The atmosphere is much more complex as there is temperature, humidity and the Earth's rotation to take into account plus of course many other factors. Modelling this requires I suspect millions if not billions of calculations plus they feed data into the model continually from thousands of measurements taken all over the Globe.

A couple of clerks with a sheet of paper and a slide rule won't cut it although this is what they did not too long ago. You may recall D Day was delayed because the weather forecast predicted high winds on the planned day - and the forecast was right! The invasion was delayed and went ahead successfully but the warning the forecasters could give was short and very prone to error. :)

So Busby, are you a climate change denier? are going to retort that the world has always gone through periods of change without a thought about man made climate change.

Aviation, Formula 1, farmers, concerts the list will ago on there are lots of revenue sources, but for the simple view of an investment, even without the additional revenue its cheap.

You didn't have to be an egghead to work it either!

If the stone is wet? tiz raining, swinging? tiz windy, dry? it's not raining

IS IT ?? BUSBY.
There is a theory that the big thinkers of the west recognising the inevitable exhaustion of fossil fuels had to devise a promotional platform for weaning the world from their addiction. To tell the populations that in 40 years, 50 years whatever that they will not be able to run their cars or heat their homes would have been received with a "not our problem attitude". So Climate Change was evolved as the motivation for the elimination of reliance on fossil fuels, a wizard wheeze that is working brilliantly and appealing to the impressionable masses, ably assisted by fracking which has prolonged the day of Armageddon (the running out of oil). Just as plausible in my opinion.
