Honda SH125 or SH300 (1 Viewer)

Hi all
I am after a scooter to put in the garage of the MH as I do not want to tow anything

I am thinking of either a honda sh125 or sh300 I would ideally like the 125 for lightness but I am worried it will struggle with 2 larger people on it about 30 stone combined ?

Has anyone got either of these models and can comment on what they are like especially performance 2 up but other pros and cons too

I'm sure you'll find the 125 a nightmare two up. You definitely need the 300 if you have the spare payload. 125's are only any good for spotty lightweight teenagers.

All modern125's are restricted to 12.5 HP. All the more powerful 125's are older two strokes.

We have a Yam Vity 125 and it runs well two up. 105kgs wet and it’s so ugly nobody would nick it

If weights not an issue go for the 300 because our Vity maxes out a 120kgs passenger weight and we exceed that.

Go for the 300. I had a Honda 125 Pantheon and a 125 S Wing. They have the same engine as the SH, but both are heavier. Both fine one up, but struggled two up going up mountains. I now have a Yamaha X Max 300, about 180kgs. A bit heavier than a SH300, but a lot more under seat storage, enough for two open face helmets and a jacket.

I have a Piaggio 300 and its good for about 85 mph two-up. I struggle to think how a 125 would cope with our combined 25stone. My old Suzuki GN125 struggled when we were just 22 st combined.

I have a SYM HD 200. It’s 115 kgs and is brilliant two up. I use it on a towball scooter rack, it’s been all over Europe without any issues, better in a garage as well.

We have the Honda Mode - 125cc

We are around 25 stone combined and whilst you will not be winning any traffic lights drag races it pulls us about reasonably well.

It would probably trot along at around 50mph two up but would not be very comfortable.

But then I don't think many small scooters are.

It all depends on what you want to do on it.

If you want to have a 100 mile trip around the mountains I suspect neither would cope very well but if you want to just want to potter about the area than it is great.

The 125 is around 30kg less than the 300 and this might be more important when you are pulling it in and out of the garage.

We had a Honda PCX 125 and went everywhere two up on it. Even went two up up and over the Belach Na Ba near Applecross. Ok, we were down to 20mph at times but she made it, which I thought was impressive. We ain't no lightweights either.

I have a Honda PCX125 and with two up 25/30 stone it’s perfect at about 70mph.
It’s now for sale as we have Electric bikes.
2011 with Honda top box and storage under seat, it’s metallic black and as new with ONLY 1104 MILES.£1200. Comes with Motorhome loading ramp. never used
In the rain.

We have a sym symphony 125 big wheel scooter. It gets us everywhere hills an all.
Ok around town but on the open road will not keep up with traffic 2 up.
Weight was the issue. By the time you have fuel, top box, 2 helmets, tie downs etc you will be well over manufacturers claimed weight.
Would love a bigger bike but our back axle loading means we keep the sym 125.

Don't know if you have looked or interested in any other makes we use a Aprilia Sports City Cube 300 cracking bike 2 up and weighs in at 150kg twin front discs

SH Mode 125, 25stone 2 up, no problem up and down, easy to handle if loading in a garage we love it.
Would I have a SH 300 without a doubt,however,the handing in putting it in garage is a major consideration along with how many mikes you will actually do on it.

Had lots of KTM off road bikes and love the brand but feel the wife will not be comfy of this type of bike

Don't think the missus would like to be perched on that although a great bike for me only plus I would have nowhere to carry me shopping and a case of beer between me legs

Yes scooters are annoyingly practical ?
I put a Shad 33 box on the back of the bike which makes it a bit better though.

We had a SYM HD200 a few years back, fantastic bike, I used it for commuting & shopping then we used it two up with the van. We toured in Derbyshire and Lake District with it (parked the van on a campsite) we went up some fairly steep hills 2 up and it never faltered, a fantastic little bike, comfortable too!
PS. The SYM is essentially a Honda!

We had the sym 125 , lovely little scooter but so underpowered on the hills
Now have a Honda sh 300 ( bought new two years ago) does everything it says on the tin
Carries two slabs of beer , all the shopping , two people ,slim enough to weave in and out the stopped traffic and does up to 90/95 mph
Not sure if I need any street cred at my age, but do need practicality

I couldn't get a Honda SH125 or SH300 in my Carthago because the door opening height is only 109cm. I guess your available door height is greater.

The SH125 seems to be taller (123cm) than the SH300 (120cm), both with mirrors removed. This based on 2012 brochure, so later models may be different, although I doubt it.

I opted for a Honda 125 PCX but we are lightweights, probably less than 18 stone combined.

If door height is a problem, you can reduce the effective height of the scooter by allowing for the ramping effect and allowing the front wheel to drop down to garage floor level (about 4cm below door opening).

However, I would advise against the latter because of the extra difficulty extracting the scooter back over the sill. My scooter sits on a channel which is level with the bottom of door opening. I drive the scooter in under engine power, no fumes noticed in hab area.

We rely on the ramp effect and front wheel dropping down into the van garage.
We also found it difficult to remove the bike over the lip, a small ramp solved this issue, only about 9" long and 1.5" high.

What I would really like is some where I could hire a 125cc scooter with big wheels for a day to see what it's like with 2 of us on it but I can't find anywhere in the Midlands area that does it, there are a few in London but I'm up near derby

Why not go to your local Honda dealer. They should have a demo you could borrow.

I have bought a few over the years from a dealer and usually they are happy to let you have a go on almost anything.

Take your licence, tell them what you want to buy but can't make your mind up whether you want a 125 or 300 and I would be amazed if you cannot get a decent length test ride on both bikes.
