Probably not the sort of thing you guys like to discuss, but does anyone know how long it takes for 'Solids' to break down in a Thetford Cassette, assuming the correct amount of the "Blue" liquid is present?

Although my wife and I have said we would try not to us the toilet for Number Two's, I have said to my wife (Who's digestive system isn't as good as mine) that if she has to, then she has to. However, I would rather not have to empty it before it had broken down.

should be nicely liquified within a week.

if the smell is worrying you just a dab of Vics under your nose will do the trick but it really isnt that bad.

After reading a top tip we changed to Tesco value biological washing liquid. 99p per bottle. We use a generous dollop in the cassette and everything breaks down quite quickly. The loo smells sweet and it's so cheap we empty it more often. I just hope the cassette doesn't break down too. :Eeek:

Although my wife and I have said we would try not to us the toilet for Number Two's,

It's a toilet for goodness sake use it !

You can always fill one faster than they will "break down". Feeling and hearing the solids ping out of the cassette is one of the little pleasures of emptying them.

We did laugh in Paris once, this crowd of Irish folk had a huge hired RV and they were dumping the cassette and everyone could here the broad Dublin accent "Ah sure I can't get it out, it's rattling round in there but it wont come out".

Oh the joys of a MH.

We use Bio Magic in ours - eases the smells and does not harm the environment.

Look up SOG for a chemical free solution.

I agree 100% with Mags52 above...

I have been told that the biological solution to loo management is more enviromentally friendly than the (banned in some countries) blue method.

After using expensive bio loo liquid for years I tried the Sainsburys 99p bio washing liquid and find it works perfectly... Massive savings!!!

In general I think there is a tendency for manufacturers and retailers in the motorhoming business to whack on huge mark ups on "specialist" items/equipment.

Why, when a domestic compressor fridge can be bought for around a hundred quid, does a motorhome one cost over five times as much?...

...and as for the special toilet paper available...!!!!

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
We always use the proper stuff in the cassette. There are 5 of us and yes we all poo in it too !
Its not that expensive , ive never looked and thought OMG
... weve used it for years since having caravans , actually earlier with the porta potti and tents.

How can bio washing liquid work , when the temps have to be 40deg for the biological action to kick in .
Granted some now work at 30 deg . But how can the bio action actually work when theres no heat involved.
Is it not just a nice washing powder smell that your getting ?
Our poo/wee isn't in the cassette long enough to break down anyway. We have to change it everyday , two at a push.

I may try some the next time we are away , I'm all for saving a bob or two if it actually works,
well at least stops the smell.....

Its all part of motorhomeing/caravanning some times when you need to go you need to go and why should a lady be expected to go out on a dark night when there is a perfectly adiquate loo in the van. Always make sure the blade is completly open put a cross of loo paper across the open hole no problem no mess. Then empty every couple of days why have a loo full of p**** hanging around the bathroom.
Do like the idea of the of the washing up liquid we will give it a try.

Been using bio laundry liquid for a while now and find it brilliant. As said a more pleasant smell when emptying and if you can leave it for a couple of days it will reduce to a liquid as PJ said earlier.

I used Boi Magic in the past and that also was good but expensive compared to the bio laundry liquid.

Carole, it's laundry liquid not washing up liquid although I have to admit I have never tried washing up liquid.

When we are on sites with decent, clean toilet blocks we tend to use them but at shows etc we just use the cassette. We used to use the cross of loo paper but found it unnecessary.

We use cheap paper (Tesco Value/Asda Smartprice) and have no problems with it.

For a couple of years we've been using Elsan Organic liquid but bought some other organic stuff at Lincoln to try that some time in future. As said above, it's not all that expensive.

When we are making full use of the cassette we empty it every day, because we find it a convenience :roflmto:

I give the cassette a good rinse out with a hose after every trip. Once a year I take off the seal cover and seal to give better access for a more thorough rinse of the blade mechanism. I also clean the seal and rub it over with a little olive oil. I also tend to sight check during the year and apply more olive oil (without removing the seal) if I think it needs it.

For anyone who has had children and changed nappies (especially terry ones rather than disposables) dealing with a toilet cassette is easy peasy ::bigsmile:

Funny isn't it most people happily clear up after cats, dogs and babies yet get all worried about their own.

Needed to have a good clean down on the black tank on the 5'er a while back and had a free sample ofthe Eco washing up liquid that had been given at one of the shows. Put the whole bottle in Certainly cleared it out well took hours of washing down the clear the bubble away.:Eeek:

without any help.....thetford blue/formaldehyde...it needs oxygen.

what better way to provide oxygen than something like 'Oxy-clean' washing additive.
put it in the tank and it releases oxygen into the water/liquid.
