Hi all,

Have a real problem with my S660 auto transmission on the Hymer 1986 2.9 deisel 410 chassis motorhome.

I have had the auto box rebuilt by a specialist company but they are unable to get the box to work without slipping in fourth gear. They are convinced it is a mechanical problem -- but honest in that they are unable to locate what the problem may be.

It works on a vacuum system which they do not understand and say that each time they put in the box it is fine -- but they are unable to get the pressure right and it burns out the fourth gear on test.

Everything was working fine until the box seized up -- they said it was because the pipe to the cooler split and the box "cooked".

I would be very grateful if anybody had any ideas to the problem?

Regards, tgee

Sorry to learn of your problem.

I have a 1987 660S so would be interested in learning the outcome of your troubles.

Seems to me you need a second opinion...

Check out Peter Hambleton... He knows loads and loads about Hymers.

Gave Peter Hambilton a bell today -- spoke with a service person who said they do not do any servicing there and he had no idea of the problem -- so that is a dead duck!!

time to look for a new gearbox, you could spend a fortune and still never get it sorted. Ditch it now and look for a new one :thumb:

That is disappointing tgee, there was a time when they would have had the time to look into it for you but I guess maybe they have grown too big now...

Hi JJ

I had a minor bump on my Hymer back end in July. I contacted Peter Hambilton and the earliest they could get me was 3rd November. As a result we have had to delay the start of our trip to Spain for the winter as the old bus would need an MOT before we go and with a light broken (on the bike carrier/tow bar) it would fail.

Peters workmanship is outstanding. He is on holiday for the whole of October.

Try your local Merc Commercial dealer. Mine is Bells Trucks at Gateshead. They sort my Hymer S700 on the 410D (1992) chassis. The older mechanics know this type of vehicle. Some of the younger ones only know how to plug it into the computer.

I looked at the Peter Russek Manual for the chassis but it does not give any details for the Autobox.

Thanks for the replies guys! After a couple of fruitless months hopefully I now feel I might get to someone who can help!

Dazzer although Mercedes say they can supply a new torque converter and transmission for around £4,270 I'm not convinced that they can -- because the transmission people say that they have requested parts for the box and mercedes say they are obsolete, and ,I have also requested a 2/3 vacuum valve which they say is also obsolete. I have also tried all the breakers and Dronsfield who do not keep these old vans and send they abroad!

John & Joan see above: I have the same manual and nothing on auto trans except that they mention that they are in some vehicles. I have done a lot of research and it does appear that Hymer requested this box for this series only -- I am not even sure if the S550 box is the same!

Jezport -- thanks for the link and I will try Martin as soon as I can.

Latest news! picked up the van yesterday from the garage and disconected the vacuum. Drove the vehicle about 7miles home without any problem except there seems to be little power. I am taking the van to an ex mercedes mechanic who will have a look this Friday.

Again - thanks for peoples help and I will keep all updated.

Latest news!

Had the van test driven by merc mechanic last Friday. Looks like the box is not slipping as such -- more a problem of gears trying to engage but they seem not sure if they should engage or stay in the same gear -- more a problem of gears not engaging as they should. When this occurs, if you lift the accelerator pedal for a second this seems to give the transmission the time to engage and all is fine. So even if I cannot get the problem fixed it would appear I could still drive the van with the vacuum disengaged and a little nursing of the gears. When confronted with a steep incline I would probably have to move the gears manually.

I have given some fault finding mercedes-benz scans of the 720/110 transmission (kindly supplied by another Hymer 660 owner) to the mechanic who will look at them over last weekend and get back to me.

The manifold is blowing badly as well. So hear's hoping with some adjustment to the vacuum etc, and the manifold leak fixed -- the van might be ready for plenty more miles to come. Especially, since I am ready to retire in a year or so. Yippee!!

Again,
thanks for the help so far.

The manifiold also went on my Hymer S700 on the 410D chassis. This was replaced by our local Mercedes dealer and has given no more problems.
