In the old days, it was easy, a PI 133mhz.. Told you what you wantd to know.

Now, I am confused,

I am thinking of replacing my Dell Inpiron 17" screen.

What should I be looking for re processor?

I do a fair bit on number crunching...

Any suggestions, pointers would be appreciated..

Steph's new lappie has the i3 which is very good. Mine has the i7 q720 1.6 GHz and I am so impressed it is a Toshiba P500 18" screen with 4 gig ram and it is screaming fast. I can go to 8 gig ram if i want as it is a 64bit system. :thumb:

Despite the fact that software still tends to be much more bloated than it should be, any machine on the market should be capable of "Office" type number crunching.

For years whenever we've wanted a new machine we've gone for something with a spec about 6 months old compared with the latest on offer in the shops. Costs a heck of a lot less than the most up to date stuff and well capable of handling stuff that doesn't involve massive files like video and games.

Like to play with photos Graham. Always have camera set to optimum so file size is massive. Once you start playing with Photoshop the file size grows at an alarming rate so when Steph got a small inheritance we treated ourselves and the extra "ooomph" makes quite a difference. Also I have offered the same advice as you to friends in the past. They say "I only want to e mail and use Word" Then a few months down the line when they have learned more they regret not buying more power.

That's fair enough Ken. I was working on the fact that Hilda mentioned number crunching.

I suppose it's a bit easier for us (with my background in IT) to understand the requirements before spending the money. Just had a look at my records and it was January 2006 when I bought this machine. Cost £599 but that included the monitor as well - and they were a lot dearer in real terms then. Jill's machine, which is slightly higher spec but came without a monitor, cost £320 a couple of months later. Both are still going strong - in Jill's case maybe because she uses Paint Shop Pro rather than Photoshop ::bigsmile:

Thanks guys

I am currently number crunching some data within Access 2007, I have over 150,000 records and I need a lot of processing power to de-duplicate both data and RSS feeds.

I onky have another 500k records plus to go... Some of the routines take over 24 hrs to complete so I am struggling on the P4.

I am also struggling with the small 80Gb hard drive and 4 Gig memory..

So all in all I am looking for something fast 300Gb hard drive plus.... 8 Meg RAM would be good and I need a 17" screen.
I am also a big Dell fan..

What in hells name does Intel® Core™ i5-450M (2.4Ghz, 4 Threads, turbo boost up to 2.66 GHz, 3M cache) mean ??

Effectively it is a built in "over clocking" device Dave. I looked at it but opted for the i7 as I was concerned about the temperature of the processor.

I am into video & photo processing so was looking to reduce rendering times, so opted for the Asus Gamer i7 with 8Gb RAM.
Interesting to compare the MS Performance chart with Ksebruce's virtually same lappy with 4Gb RAM. Doubt there is much software around yet that can actually use the extra 4Gb or even the 64 bit.
Word is that MS will try and ditch the 32 bit when they can.
My disappointment is with the screen resolution on lappies compared to Dell's best. Heck, my dead Inspiron had 1980 x 1600.
Rumours of a new processor from Intel that will make a real difference but those rumours are always about, aren't they?

Hi Dave,
I wanted to replace my 8 years old PC end 2009 but postponed it because Directx11 was coming.

This time AMD won the race by far and Nvidia only introduced their first videocard i think it was april 2010 !!
It looks like Nvidia is now since end of july back in the race after they have introduced the GTX460 serie, all known videocard builders have several versions of it. Which one should i choose than, the ECS GTX 460 Black (NBGTX460-1GPI-F), or the MSI GTX 460 Hawk, or the Zotac AMP! ZT-40403-10P or should i go for the Gainward/Palit like for instance the Gainward GeForce® GTX 460 1024MB "GS-GLH"

But still not decided whether to go for the AMD or Nvidia card
Let alone which brand and version :shout:

Than i investigated what kind of hard disks i wanted. Want good ones, because a wrong hard disk can slow down the system considerably, so maybe a SolidStateDisk would be an option, but the price is very high if you calculate Euro divided by GB. Maybe the Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS (300 GB, SATA-300, 10,000 rpm, 16 MB cache) is a better option, or maybe still another one......

Note for myself, have to check the motherboard, could mean i need some adjustment to the motherboard after the decisions have been made

But still not decided for which one to go

Oh boy, need a motherboard as well. Should i go for the ASUS P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition (2101 BIOS) or is the Asus Rampage II Extreme a better option ........ or should it be another brand ???

But still not decided for which one to go

Okay the processor is simple it should be an i7, but which one !!! should i go for the Core i7 Extreme 965 (3.2 GHz, 8 MB L2 memory cache) or is it better to use an Intel® Core™ i7-970 Processor (12 MB Cache, 3.20 GHz, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI), but it could be that an Intel® Core™ i7-940 Processor (8MB Cache, 2.93 GHz, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI) would do the job as well

But still not decided for which one to go

After that i have to sort out what kind of casing i want, also depends whether i want to use the video cards in SLI Need some more room for that option and it might be i have to add some additional cooling like the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo Pro. This little fellow wants some room as well :Eeek:

But still not decided for which one to go

Will the Antec TruePower Quattro 1200W do a good job as powersupply ? And will memory like 3x*2 GB G.Skill F3-10666CL7T-6GBPK (DDR3-1333/PC3-10666, CL7-7-7-18) satisfy me ???

But still not decided for which one to go

Last but not least ---- I am serious !!!!!!!!

In that case do you really want an off-the-shelf PC or do you want something more specialised? Most off-the-shelf stuff these days is aimed at domestic markets (entertainment and photos like Ken). At the least you probably want to be looking at machines designed specifically for business.

Hi Dave,

You did not misguide me, its just my way of telling you that knowing many details not always makes the choice quicker or easier. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
