So here were are at Shrewsbury enjoying the Vintage show when somebody think they have a funny smell and smoke coming out of their van, after a quick panic and rummage in the storage under the floor he finds a Li-Po bike battery smoking, NOT on charge in use or even recently charged.

The name on the battery is Volt,

It and the van still stinks but has burnt out and every body is safe and we had good van spacing but still frightening.

Wow, good job the van wasn't in storage or left unoccupied.. How many funsters have similar batteries for their bikes? Quite a few.

I had 2 under the seats in the van when we both had electric bikes. I would have been really worried had i seen this.

A bit worrying, I keep mine in the Motorhome garage on the bikes about ½ charged at the mo so I won't charge them until needed.

Was it a FUNster, did I miss-read it ?

We've been travelling with many Lithium batteries for 13 years, not had a fire yet.
Yes a funster and friends of ours, van was parked next to techno Andy at our meet so not a friend of a friend said. A wake up call for a few people who witnessed it.

OK, it was a FUNster.

So now we are awake what do we do ? I have 3 e-bike batteries in the garage. I have power tools with Lithium. I have loads of gadgets with Lithium. How long do you reckon I've got ? Is it days, weeks, even as long as a year ?

Lithium ion as used for power tools are not known for combusting
Lithium polymer require more care and the one today was only 3 yrs old

I honestly don’t know the answer to that, we also have lithium of some sort, the photo I took and posted shows Li-Pol on the end of the battery, are the ones we have LiFePo? Don’t know, OK I am sure this was a very rare occurrence BUT, if the owners had not been around what would have happened, the battery did not show flames but got hot enough to burn all the plastic fittings and anything it was touching and if it had remained In the van even if there was no fire which actually I think there would have been I think the van would have been written off with smoke damage anyway.

As for Funsters
My experience is that forum members account for possibly less than 1% of Motorhomers so a single fire on here is by no means insignificant and there are likely many more in the bigger picture

You really have opened Pandora's Box - now we all need to be asking our insurers if we are covered if our e-bikes or even laptops catch fire. And of course it could be electric wheelchairs.

And if they say NO, there goes a major part of a lot of our holidays.

The owner concerned will be sending the burnt out battery case back to the suppliers/manufacturers so it will be interesting to see what they say.

Before everyone goes into panic mode, check what type of battery your e-bike actually uses. Not all will be the higher risk type Li-Po. For example the Bosch e-bike power pack or power tube is Lithium-ion

Always wondered how safe these batteries were. For years I have used and charged small lipo batteries and had a special fireproof case to put them in whilst being charged and stored.
All of a sudden, you apparently don’t need these cases!

I have not read anything that suggests that these are any safer and some articles suggest the opposite.
