I ummed and aahed a year or so back about fitting a TPMS and when an offer came up for the Tyrepal Solar I splashed out - glad I did now!

I've just spent the weekend at the Frend Grand Prix and stopped Monday night at the aire at St-Eulalie de Cernon - nice aire and a fortified village a couple of hundred metres along the lane.

Yesterday morning, I'd moved just a couple of metres leaving the grass pitch when the alarm went off on the Tyrepal - rear offside showing 0.7bar! Got out and the tyre looked distinctly saggy. Fortunately there were plenty of hardstanding pitches so I was able to change the wheel without too much drama. First time I'd had occasion to remove a wheel and fortunately the spider and 2lb club hammer were sufficient to ease the nuts. It was a two jack job, I found out. The supplied scissor jack lifted the chassis at the hard point behind the axle but left the axle and wheel hanging on the Ducato suspension. A bottle jack under the leaf spring raised the wheel sufficiently to replace it, so didn't need to call anyone out. I wouldn't want to do this on the side of the road, though...

Anyway, the offending object was a bolt or screw - off to my local tyre man this afternoon to see whether he'll repair it, all being well. Naturally, it's the youngest of the tyres, of course. Here in France the limit is 'on the tread of the tyre' rather than the UK 'inner 3/4 of the tread' so we shall see...:)

So if you've had any doubts about the value of fitting a TPMS, doubt no longer. Highly recommended(y)

Snap! Same for us last week https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/foru...-code-for-funsters.194219/page-2#post-3391471 . Think all vehicles should have some form of TPMS & for us our TyrePal unit alerted before the Citroen TPMS .

For anyone considering this - see the above thread as TyrePal website have a Sale at the moment & although our Fun discount code won't work on discounted prices the Caravan & Motorhome Club discount code does (y) Unfortunately no-one has shared this code via PM with us yet so can't advise what it is but members can find it by logging in to their website or maybe asking a friend who is a member.

I am interested. My only concern is I assume it measures the pressure by effectively keeping the tyre valve open and relying on the seal of the sensor. I have read bad reports about other sensors that leak air. These are similar but change colour rather than sending a signal. Any one comment either way. Thanks.

Anyone tried the cheaper £25ish systems from amazon?

I bought one earlier this year, the default setting was for a car at around 33psi. I must have spent 2 or 3 stressful hours trying to alter the settings to motorhome tyre ones and gave up in the end. The Chinglish instruction booklet was worse than useless and I couldn't find any help on the net either. I need to have another look at it, but don't have much confidence in sorting it out.

Cheaper/other brands may be just as good but as it's a safety product we chose TyrePal as WSL specialise in this area & so far (over 5 years) have been very happy with their kits.

We’ve had tyrepals for years and done thousands of miles with them and never had leaking valves. Go for it???

Tyrepal saved me from having a shreded tyre today. Just driven about 100 miles back home and was on the A180 within about a mile of the storage yard.
I was doing about 55 mph in the outside lane when there was a loud buzzing, took me a second or so to realise my tinnitus is not that loud, looked at the unit and my nearside rear was down to about 50psi from 60psi.
I immediately slowed down and got into a handily place slip road, by the time i had come to a halt it was down to 40psi, after placing my warning triangle and getting the jack out it was competely flat.
A quick look at the tyre suggests the inflation valve has split. Tyrepal has paid for itself.

That’s a good enough reason to get metal valves fitted now.....??

Yes. Seens better than the more expensive tyrepal it replaced as one of the tyrepal sensors died and the complete kit was cheaper than one tyrepal sensor. Display is colur and easier to read than the tyrepal one. I actually have it on the drivers side window. Its intended to go on the windscreen with the solar panel on the back, but the a class windscreen is too far away. I've had it about a year and would rate it better than tyrepal, and a quarter of the price.

I have had tyrepal for over a year now and swear by it , total peace of mind and always aware of tyre pressures at a glance.

funflair and Just smiffy .... I know you recommended steel replacement valves Martin but just though it worth mentioning that TyrePal say not to use sensors on aluminium valves in their user manual....

“Do not use the system with aluminium valve stems.
▪ Do not fit sensors to tyres that have been treated with internal tyre sealant. The sealant may damage the sensor or impair its functions.

Also don’t use sensors on tyres treated with internal tyre sealant.

(Sorry...haven’t worked out how to include posters’ quotes since the new look MHF).

Hi Margaritaman

Just click "quote" on the bottom right of the post you want to "quote" I guess it's a corrosion issue with alloy valves mine are chromed brass I think but I have the inline sensors on a flexible extender anyway (y)

I have metal valve stems and tyre sealant, but as previously mentioned my TPMS isn't tyrepal. It may have been my tyre sealant that caused one of my tyrepal sensors to fail though.

I found another advantage with a good TPMS like Tyrepal a few weeks ago. We went over the Alps for the first time with the trailer on the back, done it many times before in the van and even do it every month in the car so i know the routes well. The descents are all about "motor bremsen" but if you're not careful you can soon use your brakes more than you think, and as i watched the tyre temperature creep up on the front wheels i realised i was using my brakes too much, was just OK in the end but on the return trip i monitored the Tyrepal much more closely and could keep things much more under control.

A great secondary feature that i hadn't really even thought about until that trip.

We have a Tyrepal 215 on the 6 tyres of RH and the solar version on our two cars. Never had a sensor leak and the systems have saved our asses on three occasions. Most recent on wife's car last week when it picked up a really slow leak due to a damaged sidewall. Tyrepal backup is superb they went to endless lengths to sort out a comms problem with the 215 system due to signal blockking caused by RHs construction. Can't recommend them highly enough.
