on and off for the whole of my existance
I have two of these, i have used in some fairly extreme conditions where you would never get a fire to light. You can boil a mug of water using just one sheet of newspaper and in the past i have burnt sheeps wool collected from a barbed wire fence to boil some water. stunck but worked. I feel it one of those bits of kit that is worth its wieght in gold on the rare occasions that it is needed.

There's more information than any sane man would want to know about Kelly and Ghillie kettles, Hobo stoves, Swiss Volcano stoves et c. here:

We prefer a hobo stove - a biscuit tin and a bit of batoning with their sheath knives. Great fun!

6 years but caravan owner in past
WE came across these in New Zealand with our cousins when we all went on a tour with a guide After walking in the southern fiords, we were miles away from civilisation on the side of a lake-desperate for a cup of tea.
Couldn't believe it when the guide took out one of these kettles, water sticks and proceeded to make the four of us a cup of tea.
Our cousins tracked one down for us as a present but it's in the shed and we've never used it.
Maybe the Bath meet....?!!!
