Hi all

Am looking to get my new navara October and pick up the Globestormer at the same time, so I am trying getting things in order.

Has anyone had a sensible quote for insuring the 5ver? Is this classed as a caravan when not hitched, can you insure it separately from the tow vehicle?

Also looking to get a cover for it, as I live near a cement works and the fallout in winter can be grim, meaning lost of hard work cleaning the van and more significantly having to use some pretty harsh acid cleaner....

Cheers PJ

Camptons, NFU,Safesure, Adrian Flux and i have heard that the caravan club will insure them now (havent tried them)
I am with Camptons who gave by far the best price for us (beware if you want to use the vehicle as a commutor vehicle to work though as that is not covered)

Camptons quoted £465, Adrian Flux only cover up to £20k.

Interesting though, they insist on insuring the tow vehicle as well, yet not so with a caravan.

Will keep searching.

Cheers

With good news that our new fiver will be ready to collect on Sat I'm now looking for insurance too. Tried NFU today and they said that they would not insure any fiver over 23 foot. Camping and Caravan Club want £860 for just the fiver and haven't tried any more yet, that'll be tomorrows task

Want separate policy for fiver as truck insured through business any other suggestions greatly appreciated

We have our Pickup & 5ver insured with camptons cost appx £600 they do insist on a tracker being fitted to the 5ver and also a Pin Lock. Ours is 33 feet.

As I thought camptons will only do both

Tried so many now I've lost count, all of them seam to have a different excuse not to insure, the best was Adrian Flux, almost got to the quote costs and the woman suddenly asked how wide it was, when I said it was 8ft she said sorry don't insure that type and that was that.

I'll not give in though although it is putting a damper on things as we are very excited for collecting it on Saturday

The reason they will only insure both is because the vehicle is a 'specialised fitted vehicle' for want of a better description and you will find that when you get your policy through it is classed as a 'motorhome' from the main insurance company even though it is logged with them as a pickup and 5th wheel, and yes i queried it when i first got a 5ver but as its classed as an 'american recreational vehicle' apparently the english insurance translation is 'motorhome' - as opposed to a truck and caravan.
The cost of the truck and cost of the 5ver is added together and your policy reflects the amount it costs, eg truck 20.000 + 5ver 27.000 insurance premium for vehicle of 57.000

Just had a call back from Adrian Flux following the message I left yesterday, I didn't mention that I had spoke to somebody else earlier, went through all the details again and the reason they wont insure this time is they have to do both the truck and 5er. Made me laugh, I told him that was a different reason to the previous call and he didn't know what to say, apart from sorry they couldn't quote.

Going to try my business insurance company now and see if I can add the 5er to the company policy.

The 5er is back at CCRV's yard, just spoke to Bill and alls gone well so far, roll on Saturday

At last its insured, eventually got a sensible quote from Scenic insurance after phoning every company in the uk, or thats what it felt like. For the 5er only £467.00 which I'm happy with as its half the other quote I got.

Now its time to enjoy it and we are off to the lakes for a week to try it out ::bigsmile:

Err 20,000 + 27,000 = 47,000

and I'm with Camptons (NIG) since May 2008 We had to have tracker in 5ver plus pin lock & our '06 Navara alarm upgraded to Thatcham 1. It should be obvious to broker at least that when 5ver is pitched up we will be using the Navara solo!

5ver Insurance

Well that's a turn up for the books, Axa through the CC has quoted £360 for both vehicles, fully comp. Usual excesses, so got to be a winner me thinks......:thumb:

My insurance for the 5er is due for renewal at the end of this month, currently with C&CC and pickup insured separately. I rang the CC for a quote and was told, and not for the first time, that they would not cover fifth wheel trailers. It seems to me that with this and breakdown cover the response you get depends on who you speak to on the day, not very satisfactory to say the least!!

Yes I will defo agree with you, the quote I eventually got and accepted was on the third time of ringing, after they had told me they dont insure 5th wheelers try Scenic / Suregaurd

I eventually got a renewal quote from the C&CC for about £440 by reducing the insured value and increasing the voluntary excess. Previously insured on a 'new for old' basis but would not payout more than insured value, new price on mine has increased by £5000 since I bought it so decided that increased premium was not worth it. I have to be careful with foreign usage restrictions as I spend 9 months + abroad, C&CC will do 365 day cover.

We had similar experiences insuring our Kountrylite Twin Slide. Initially apart from Camptons all the other companies I had heard of from these Blogs found some reason for not offering insurance ranging from wrong make of trailer, being too high a value or the security at the storage facility we use not being good enough. Camptons did give us a reasonable quote for the combination but at the time we had only got the pickup and although they would insure this seperately they were ridiculously expensive (almost as much as for the whole rig). Admittedly they did say they don't really do cars.
We were about to go with Camptons but were told about Scenic Insurance by Alex of Calder Leisure when we were at the NEC show in the Spring or rather he told us about a sister company of theirs who initially denyed all knowledge of doing fifth wheels. They did come back to me the next day however. They were more expensive than Campton but did insure on a "new for old" basis (Camptons do market value). They also are fairly insistent on having either a Phantom Tracker or ALKO wheel locks, obviously the latter is unlikely to fit. I mentioned all this to Alex who did persuade them to settle for a Tracker tracker but we decided there were significant advantages with the Phantom (in particular it tells you when the battery on the trailer is getting low), to go with one of these anyway, and after a few teething troubles it really is the business.
Having just spent upwards of £35,000 on the trailer we felt that a new for old policy was a good idea and finished up with Scenic who were very helpful.
