Have just got a 4w solar panel, size of a laptop when opened to use on
my main battery to keep it topped up when van is static for a long period.
My question is, its connected directly to my battery using croc clips so will
this be OK or do I need a regulator for this size panel?

Cheers Doddy

A 4 watt charge into 12 volts = 1/3 of one amp so no regulator needed

But 1/3 of one amp may not be enough to keep up with the self discharge rate of your battery which will be between 3% and 20%. So it is possible that your battery will continue to go flat even with the panel connected.
