Hi all,
On our 99 Ducato based Hymer, we have recently been suffering with a faulty fuel gauge. The gauge gives readings of anything from full to empty, when the tank is anywhere from full to half. eg, having left Swansea heading for Hereford on a full tank, the gauge read just over 3/4 full. When leaving Hereford heading for Peterborough, the gauge read under 3/4 full.
During the journey up the M5, the gauge read empty for about half an hour. When I came to stop at the traffic lights on the M6/M1/A14 junction, the gauge read just over half.
When we refuelled near home, the 80 ltr fuel tank took 41 ltrs, and the gauge read just over 3/4 full.
I did notice on the odd occasion, that going over a bump caused the gauge to move towards the correct reading, but would return to a false reading within a few seconds.
In Luxembourg a few weeks ago, the gauge read empty and the low warning light was on, (oh sh##), but it only took 63ltrs at the pump. That meant that there was about 17ltrs left (almost 4 galls).
I don't know if this is a mechanical fault, or an electrical fault, ie, resistance/bad earth somewhere. I have checked for good connections behind the fuse box, as I noticed that tapping the interior fuse box quite hard, caused the gauge to move. Also last week when I was testing out the new wiper blades, the gauge rose towards the full mark, but then backed off towards 3/4 again. I cannot access the connections at the sender unit without dropping the tank.
As we say in Scotland, I am completely dumbfoonered, (dumbfounded).
If anyone can point me in the right direction for a solution to the problem, I'd be very grateful.
Cheers me dears.
Jock, (and Rita, as she is quite concerned about it too. After all, it's her that will have to push the MH if we run out of fuel).
