Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
On my way back from Glasgow yesterday my mate asked me if we could swing past ASDA for some shopping, it'd save him from getting home only to turn around & go back into town.

So far so good, I parked well away from the doors as usual, our car is a Mercedes R-Class & a tad on the large side.
I've always avoided parking near the doors as I detest getting parking dings by careless shoppers. :swear:
My mate popped into the store but, then I decided that I needed the loo (I'm a man of a certain age lol) so being disabled & totally crippled by arthritis I had to pop into a disabled bay near to the door, my blue badge was displayed.

So hirpling back to the car I got to within about 10 feet & there was a couple looking round my jalopy, then they went round to the front, appeared to look at the Mercedes badge & private plate followed by a declaration that "this is shocking & disgusting".
So by now I was opening the car & I asked them what the problem was?
I wondered if they hadn't seen the blue badge?
They then shocked me by declaring that "these disabled bays were not for large Mercedes cars with private plates!
I didn't even reply, I was so stunned by their comments. :censored:

This isn't the first time Hazel or I have had scowls of derision at our vehicles when parking in disabled bays, our Range Rover & Discovery's always provoked the worst responses.
Our daughter lived less than half a mile away & had a livery yard with quite a lot of the land on slippery hills, we were often called into parental duties whereby Fliss needed to get up onto the hills to repair fences etc, so we always felt perfectly justified for running such a car. Towing duties have always been a necessity & our current car is no exception, so its a 4x4 but not of the off road type.

I've never had cause to park our motorhome in a disabled bay but, I shudder to think how these tree huggers would react?

It’s just jealousy. I’ve been spat at and shouted at when we bought a new Range Rover a few years ago and before that I had an E Type V12, I got people blowing their horns and flashing lights if I even dared to overtake them.

I have had the black looks because I dared get out of a car displaying a blue badge......but, shock horror......NO GREY HAIR & still in my 40's & I used to look younger than my age according to others, so that would have made it worse.
That had to be the reason because it was always the walking nearly dead giving those looks.
Well I would rather not have MS, it would be nice to get old without that to contend with, but it's not to be.

I have and only once had an issue. That was a peaked hat, hi vis vested parking attendant at a well known supermarket chain at 9:45 on a Sunday. He told us we couldn't park there because they had received complaints! On crutches at the time, I gave him short shrift and carried on into the cafe for breakfast.

I then dropped a suitably worded note to their HO.

Unfortunately it’s part of the British disease. Those that haven’t,don’t like to see you’ve got anything nice. The fact that you’ve worked your bollix off for 40 plus years and haven’t drunk it away is lost on them. It’s what I call socialist snobbery.

Of course,in America you’d be congratulated for your success...........but then again maybe they’d just shoot you and take the car!!:xsmile::xsmile:

Can't remember ;)
You park where you have to/want or need to mate:xThumb: ----tell them to do one(y)--they don't give blue badges to anyone who does not need one these days --- As far as I know there are no restrictions on what vehicle you drive --What if you needed a wheelchair in the back ?Hardly going to fit one in a Mini, although these days with the mini growing up you probably could fit one in easy :xdoh:

If they knew how difficult it is to get a disabled badge they wouldnt dare say a thing.
When I needed one I had to fill in all the usual forms and then go to a health centre for a full medical.

Unfortunately @ambulancekidd there’s some folk who would prefer us with disabilities to be still riding around in these death traps, I think they were produced as a method of culling the disabled

One of our neighbours for me is a bad example of a blue badge holder.

About 12 years ago he had a bad car crash and the head injures left him with a form of tunnel vision for which his driving licence was revoked. He applied for a blue badge and got one so his wife could drive him about and shortly after he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer which was successfully treated.
After about a year he regained his sight and the doctors gave him the nod to have his driving licence back.

He has continued to hold his blue badge over the past 11 years or so even thought he returned to work and has no mobility problems other than you would expect with getting older.

About 18 months ago we arranged to a show at the NEC together and he said that he would drive as his blue badge would get us priority parking. Curious, I asked him how come he still had a blue badge and his answer was that because he had prostate cancer the blue badge is issued because he has a terminal disease. Just to rub it in, his wife is registered as his carer.

Now is he playing the system or is the system allowing it to be abused or am I seeing a problem that's not there ?

You would be surprised at the high number of ethnic BMW drivers who forget to display their blue card when parked in the local motorway services disabled bays :)

Reminds me of when we were teenagers & raced karts. We wanted Greeves engines as the Villiers was discontinued& hard to get + parts, & the only way to get them was to go to an interview at the Invacar Factory, near Rayleigh in Essex , with Preston-Cobb, the cousin who Bert Greeves invented the original car for.
For a man who was severely paralysed & with a myriad of other problems he was a good laugh . He regularly crashed his high performance version, read that as deadly, of an Invacar. I believe he was also the only person to get a speeding ticket somewhere between 80-90mph?:D2

I knew the owner who made them is first one did not have a body, he used a wheel chair but has far has I know he never used one with a body on. The factory was in Essex.

They were built by (and badged as) Greeves. The Greeves Invacar built in Thundersley. I have a soft spot for their motorcycles.

Or would be if there were any around. Do you know of one that has been preserved because they were supposed to be recalled and destroyed?
Maybe I should have put probibly a classic as I don't know
