With the super long, dry, hot summer our Walnut tree was very happy, well at least enough to produce 4kgs of fruit.

WhatsApp Image 2018-11-05 at 23.33.22.jpeg

Now they are nicely drying out for a few days in a warmish place. Had a few at the weekend and they were very nice. Next time when the tree fruits i think we'll pickle half as i've no idea how we'll get through this many nuts.....

Walnut pate:
Put a load of shelled nuts into a food processor. Whizz until the consistency of fine sand which will hold together when pinched between finger and thumb.
Add small amount of blue cheese ( you can adjust the amount to your taste) whizz in processor. Add either more cheese or small amount of butter and process until it holds together. Press into a ramekin and chill in fridge for a few hours.

We learnt the hard way with walnuts, my wife collected a few off our tree and then proceeded to peel them so they could dry out only to be left with black stained fingers that lasted for days

I’ll happily collect a kilo or two off you :)

I love my nuts;)

I have a lovely idea that instead of reaching for a biscuit that we (wife and i) can snack on these, 1 at a time..... should keep us going this winter

No need to peel them, just leave the fruit part to decay and fall off. Actually the Guinea Pigs ate most of them here. If you pickle them then you need to prick them with a fork (a lot!!!) and you really must wear kitchen gloves as it stains your skin something terrible.....

Our lovely next door neighbours walnut tree was heaving this year so we were given over and above our usual bag full ready for shelling a couple of weeks ago.
Two coffee and walnut cakes made and devoured with many more to come I hope. (y)

When visiting friends in Spain earlier this year, they made me a lovely mushroom and walnut risotto with their own walnuts. It was very nice.

It's also been a good Shrooming autumn, plenty of truffles too. But my risotto is terrible:(

Wow, I think it would be better with walnuts :ROFLMAO: but all credit for the sacrifice. Don't think it will ever be on Masterchef.

Our African Grey loves chicken drumsticks. Throws the meat away and cracks the bone open. Makes me wince every time I stroke him as he has had my fingers more than once!

4kg ... that's small fry :D ... we brought back about 30kg of them after our August/September holiday collecting them from Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Belgium, etc ... picking them is quite 'addictive'! :D2

We've kept some for ourselves (our dogs LOVE walnuts!), some for family and the rest I bagged up for the Hull Greyhound Rescue charity to sell in their shop, I also got about 20kg of chestnuts and some almonds, so all in all over £100 in value for the charity I should think. (y)

Wow 30kgs is definitely a lot !

This autumn the market seems to be saturated as every other farmer is selling them from the road side at £3.50 for 500grms.

There’s little more satisfying than eating your own produce ... rye and walnut bread is delicious and my carrot cake recipe uses ground walnuts.
