IT SHOULD READ...GOOD MUNICIPAL AND AIRES IN NORMANDY!!

First time to France, and really lost in where to go first. It be nice to land and spend a couple of days finding our feet and regrouping.

Ideally, I prefer a municipal site rather than a Aire, as I may wish to spend more than one night before moving on.

So any good municipals anyone can recommend prefer near to the coast and with nice walks and not too far from Calais, but happy to drive a hour or two

Also like to know of any good Aires as well.

There are nice aires at Le Touquet and Le Crotoy. The municipal campsite at Bayeaux is very clean and tidy.

We stayed on a nice municipal in Arronmanche last year if that is of any help but guess there would be more further on, there are a few pics of it in my album, 1min walk to everything and seemed very safe and clean, we would def go there again

Next door also was a Aire that looked good but very busy. (first week of july)

Not sure what size m/h you have.... it wouldn't suit RV's

Thanks for the Aires. They seem a good call.

Bayeaux seems quite a drive from Calais. Multimaps says 5 hour drive. Bit of a stretch after a 7 hour drive to Dover.

Any good Municipals close-ish to Calais?

Dave

Thanks for that. Again probably a bit of a stretch for a first call from Calais. But the early signs are that I will have to 'Aires' it and then travel on for a Municipal?

We stopped at a place for about 2/3hrs nap travelled from Calais thru the nite, not sure of the name others will know (we were looking for the well known aire forgotten the name now that everyone recommends, saw this place with other m/hs and parked up, it has the river in front of it with a bridge to the left, aire by nite , town car park by day, had a little cafe premise, toilets and nr a shopping centre would loved to know where it was, did take pics there as it was so pretty for a car park

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Normandy will take you a min of 2.5 hours if you use the motorway, much longer if you don't.

But there are absolutely shedloads of Aires - and campsites both Municipal and private - all along the top coast. The beaches are 100% fab, so they cater very well for the tourist! Some are quait refained, some are hamburger city - and others are both!!

Really if it's a 7hr drive to Dover for you, then you'd be better just spending one night in Calais or very near to it and then 'go for it' from there - not try to go for Normandy straight off?

Le Crotoy for instance is about 75/90 mins and it's lovely, charming little place, lovely beach etc etc plus it has a little steam train that puffs round to St Valery sur Somme, charming place to spend a few days. Most aires are 48 hrs max not 24 and if like the Le Crotoy one on the harbour (there are 2) HUGE and not manned - you just buy a 'parking ticket' at the machine - who except you is really gonna know how long you have been there?

Pick a place or two on that top coast you fancy the names of - and then investigate specifically - on t'internet and on here - someone will know something!!!

We stayed here one night waiting for our return ferry, nothing special, cheap I think...

We had a walk later and saw the area by the beach, big RV parked up, good firm ground and a cafe next door.

Just ten mins up the road from Calais.

Just back from Normandy and now depressed .Great place to go and so easy to find sites to pull up on , you really will be spoilt for choice.Would suggest you break your journey to Bayeux with a stop at Honfleur about 2.5 hrs drive on the toll roads.
These are the aires/sites we stopped at hope it helps.

Honfleur– Large Aires(about 100 vans) .Very close to the center so a nice handy stop but nothing fancy -if you’re lucky and arrive early'ish you can plug in . 6 Euros per night

Bayeux – Municipal site , very clean and tidy and 2 minutes walk to the heart of the City , highly recommended .We stayed three night on this site.

Mont St Michel Aire - parking right on the causeway , 10 Euro for 24 hrs . Basic and busy but what a setting

Utah Beach Aire – right next to the museum and beach , large field with plenty of space , cafe close by – free to stay overnight

St Honorine Des Pertes on the D514 (49 deg 20.886N : 000Deg 48.999 W ) .Not in the Aires book but a great site .6 Euru incl EHU , cafe on site and a nice small village setting.

Insigny Sur Mer – nice air on the seafront but only about 6 spaces so get there early .

Arromanche Aire - right next to the clifftop 360 cinema , 4 Euro per night, no services but boy what a view to wake up to.

St Vallery Sur Somme . Big Aire with loads of space. About 10 minutes stroll to the lovely waterside town .

Le Touquet Paris Plage . Two Aires close together .10 minutes walk to the shops .

Escalles Aire . More like a small camp site but very nice and only a 15 minute to the Tunnel . 9 Euro incl EHU etc .

Can also recommend the municipal camp site in Domfront. Very cheap, very clean and modern toilet blocks. Nicely laid-out site. Probably a bit out of your way, but a quaint little town and very pleasant for a night or two.

...and all the over flow parking full......so about turn and came away.......very popular aire :thumb:

This is Honfleur, what everybody raves about....The old town is very beautiful...the Aire can get very crowded, Germans, Nederlands, Belgiums, Brits, and the french.
