Insurance is really really really simple..............tell the broker the truth, let them assess if you need a FT policy or not, pay the appropriate premium, otherwise you might as well not bother insuring at all as cover based on anything but the whole truth will be invalidated if you had to claim. It’s that simple......really really simple;)

We just got insurance from a not too dis-similar perspective stated that we will be selling house and then 3 months before we move in to new house, using relatives address for the interim, but Aviva policy stated you need to be on the electoral roll or have a 9 month tenancy agreement otherwise you are classed as No Fixed Abode and need a Full Timing policy which takes costs to about 100 per month. Some brokers stated it should be fine not to have full timing policy for a short period but when asked to put it in writing they declined and actually said even if just for one week your policy could be void if not notified and switched to full time.

the only person who can decide the information "they need' is the insurer or broker.

just because they don't ask the question, doesn't mean they don't "need to know" .. not being fully honest is called "Non Disclosure "
Not disputing that but I think he's getting 'carried away' (over excited? :D) with it all and he's telling them a lot more ... but that's just my 'feeling' about it.

It is not until you live abroad that you realise how cheap UK vehicle insurance is. 800/year is new vehicle full comp money with 35 years ncb :(

Just had my renewal notice from Comfort and my premium has been reduced from £540 to £522 on my 2015 Hymer B678. That is for 25,000 miles per year with full UK and Europe breakdown. It has 3 years new for old cover but that is no good for me because it is only up to a a total mileage of 15,000, and I am well over that now.

I spent a long time searching last year and Comfort were by far the cheapest. They required me to fit a Cat 5 or 6 Tracker, but even taking the cost of the fitting and first year's subscription into account they were still cheaper than any of the others including my previous insurer Safeguard, who wanted close to £1,000! The C&CC wanted over £2,000 and the CMC were only a bit lkower than that.

I don't think I will bother wasting my time phoning around for other quotes this year!

In the big scheme of things £600/£800 for a motor worth £57k is not overtly expensive considering the risks of full timing ,just a thought :)

I agree with the first part, but not the second re risks Re fulltiming.

Ok, so you’re using the van 100% of the time, but so do many others who retain a home, there are many 365 days policy’s. ( for European travel)
The ONLY difference is you don’t have a home for your exclusive use whenever you want it.....BUT, a FT policy does NOT provide you with accomodation should your van be off the road, and you are much more likely to be cautious and take more care when FT because if you have a problem, you have a big one! In fact, you get NOTHING extra from a ‘normal’ policy except the peace of mind that you are covered. So imho the risks should be less, but the premium is vastly increased, it is certainly a rip off, but sadly one I have to pay for.

That said, it works out around a fiver per day, for a £70+k van, with full EU cover inc breakdown and unlimited mileage, and I don’t pay council tax or utility bills anywhere, so in the great scheme of things not so bad.

NFU are either very good or wont even cover , very dependent on postcode (even more so than all ins co's ) I have 5 vehicles with them , and have found them very good over the years. I still compare meerkats , just to "keep em honest" , but when you factor in their pluses it pays to stay with them . Forget about m/cycles with them !!! Being a Mutual , you get bonus deduction on renewal.
£276 this time for me :) So RV is in effect free almost !!!

Right then, I've taken a few quotes this arvo.......

New Van £57000
Fully Comp
Max NCD (protected)
Legal protection
Both of us no offences ..... blah blah
12000 miles per yr estimated

Prices range from £630 to over £800 !!

And Comfort said 'well if you are renting your house out while you go away, then you are FULL TIME! £800 min!

So where am I going wrong? How does every one else managed £300 to £400? Are you all driving old bangers? or just doing a few miles around the block?

I am confused, I need to lie down in a dark room for a while :eek:
I don't think less than 57k necessarily means its an old banger!!!!!

Might be worth trying when our son was young his job could legitimately have several titles the premiums then varied widely

So here's the thing......

Does fitting an alarm or tracker really save on premiums? or are they all a bit of a placebo/comfort blanket?

I hear a lot about @eddievanbitz and his growler................ just wondering? (I quite like the idea of that actually)

With Comfort we had no choice than to fit a tracker.

When I asked about an alarm they said it would make no difference to the premium as I already had the tracking device fitted so the alarm was for peace of mind only.

I believe if you can afford an alarm fit one as it does give piece of mind but also has a deterrent effect on the opportunist who is looking for a quick entry/exit without any noise or being spotted by someone. Make it as difficult for them as you can and they’ll likely go elsewhere.(y)(y)
It does work I’ve seen first hand as a crime prevention officer over 14 years.

I personally don't think that the primary reason for getting a motorhome security system fitted is discount, but as Tesco's say "Every little helps"

The insurers wax and wane with discounts and it is hard to keep track on who's offering what, but currently Caravan Guard for example are offering 19% discount for a Van Bitz system

insurance is as it should be here. You claim and they pay you out if full comp / claim off other partypif there fault. There is no knock for knock with Spanish companies.
Full comp is usually only available for first three years or continuously if owned from new. No chance of changing companies after a few years as others will only offer tpf&t .
Anyfhing classed as a van, or van based , of with rear seats is commercial and insured as such.Any goods carried are insured and you have no choice as to how it is classedc
Also value in event of a claim is based on government yearly published values which cover every type of vehicle , boat, 4 x4, etc

This depends on the underwriter...

For example we got no discount for our Growler or Cat 5 tracker, because an alarm of Growler calibre plus a cat 5 tracker were a requirement to get the cover.

Personally I’d not have the tracker I’ve got if it wasn’t an insurance requirement, I’d go for Eddies solution.

But if you are having an alarm and or tracker to get an insurance discount, you need to make sure they are used at all times as if you tell the insurers you have them, get a discount, don’t use them and have the van nicked you could have some difficulties getting a pay out.

Up our way a Growler is the nickname given to a wife who has a face like a smacked arse.

It took me around 3-months of membership to this forum to realise that everyone was talking about his alarm system and not, cough-cough, someone else:rolleyes:

Sorry Eddie(y) @eddievanbitz

Well that's the thing, when they asked me 'will you be renting your house out?' I did say yes (but)...........

The 'but' is that we will rent it whilst we cruise around UK looking for another one to buy to live in....... sort of temporary:cautious:

On the other hand C&CC said 'we don't care as long as you have registered address in UK'

:confused::confused:
Bit like being half pregnant:rolleyes:

There is a Funster who insists on a job title of "cook" and not "chef" due to the difference in insurance premiums.

I just renewed the insurance on our car...... not quite like for like cover as the new policy has breakdown cover included which the old one didn't. The new policy is £50 cheaper than the quote from the existing company. When I phoned to confirm I was not renewing the current policy the broker said he could not match the cover or price.

You do need to be honest with insurance companies but give them the facts that are true at the time. Ask about admin fees and the like "just in case" circumstances change. If you need cover at the moment when you are working and living in a house you own or rent that is what you declare as it is true. Then if you retire and become a full-timer you declare that at the point it happens. Be safe and stay legal.

I think you'll find that ANY Thatcham approved 2-1 alarm will qualify for the discount ... not knocking the Vanbitz one but you don't have to have one of their system unless you particularly want it, so long as the one you have fitted is approved it should satisfy for the full discount.

I have no knowledge of why they specify the Vanbitz alarm, perhaps they have a link with them (paying for advertising or commission to CG when a customer has a VB system installed) not sure and nothing wrong with either scenario if it is the case, but it doesn't mean that is the ONLY alarm you will get the full discount for.

We have an Autowatch 695 RLC alarm which is a Thatchem 2-1 upgrade approved alarm and got the discount from Safeguard. I did discuss with them whether having an alarm and tracker gave a bigger discount and was told no, only one of them will get the discount, if you have both it doesn't increase it.

NFU Mutual don’t insist on either an alarm or immobiliser, however they do offer extra discounts if you do have them

From memory it’s 15% for the alarm and 10% for the immobiliser. You can’t combine the two savings.

Nope! No contra trading, no "special deals" probably nearly 30 years specialising in motorhome security with a proven track record!

We dont recommend any insurance company since the FTA told us that we were not qualified (insurance wise) to give insurance advice

We don't, many do, desperate to get a "seal of approval" saying "Look, Look Look! "ABC" recognise us. Truthfully we are too busy to get involved in such arrangements. Perhaps they have looked at their losses and realised that our systems work?

In the same way we don't advertise or do very many shows (this year NEC twice and stupidly, the Peterborough show)

Our biggest challenge is fitting existing customers in! Could be our fantastic record with protecting our customers vehicles?

Repeat business is always a good recommendation to others about a company's products and service. (y)

Could be our fantastic record with protecting our customers vehicles?
More than likely and also that when the question of which an alarm system to get is asked about on the forum just about everyone who's had one of your systems recommends you. (y)

What I'm trying to say is that whilst your systems, from what I've read/heard, are excellent it doesn't mean that other companies systems aren't also as suitable for people's needs especially if they live some distance from your premises.
