Away for 90 days - Home Insurance? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Has anyone any ideas as to who is best for home insurance if you are going away for 90 consecutive days? It doesn't seem like many companies will do it and those that will are extremely expensive. Anyone had experience with this?

I think you may struggle to find one. Camping & Caravan Club are supposed to do it but the broker they use want an arm and a leg for the privilege.

C&CC certainly do it as do M&S. As far as cost is involved we paid circa £350 ish last year including about £6000 worth of cycles on it with C&CC.

This was one of the most competitive I could find especially including the bikes.

Luckily my brother and wife often stay for a few days going and/or returning from the continent as they live up north so the place is not unoccupied for long periods. We also have a good neighbour who deals with the post and checks the place out daily

Yes we are in a similar situation but most home insurers will not accept that arrangement and will consider you to be away 90 days or whatever.

The conditions quite clearly state 'unoccupied' not specifically who occupies. Also if you go over the limit it only reduces cover on certain things such as flooding due to leaking plumbing, which would not be noticed if the house was actually unoccupied.

Due to various health issues we cannot be away all that long anyway.

I suspect unless there is another name on the electoral role the insurers would not accept the property has occupancy.

NFU cover 90 days, but you do need someone going in once a week.

Most polices class occupied as a person who normally resides at the property, so a relative who pops in to stay the the odd night doesn't count, although a few companies do allow this.
60 days unoccupied is the norm with a lot of companies but they are happy with longer periods if certian conditions are met like, heating on and set to 12/15° or water & heating drained down etc.

A painful business ringing round them all as they always have refer it back to the underwriters.

Thank you for everyone's input. The Camping and Caravannning Club have come up trumps. The cover is brilliant (Royal and Sun Alliance), full accidental damage, all the bells and whistles for £346 and we can go away for up to 180 consecutive days without any conditions, we just lock up and go. So chuffed with that.

You were lucky I got some prices out of them last year, £875, or £475 with no flood cover below 2m.
