Latest auto update killed my laptop. Just an endless loop rebooting into setting up. No escape or ability to get to safe mode.
Previous updates killed the internal WiFi and internal camera.
Back to square one now having reverted to a reinstall.
What a waste of a day of my life.

Eight Years and 28,000 Miles.
A bloody nuisance, already rendered my windows phone pretty much useless, now worried about my little notebook.

Only stick with it so I can use Mapsource..

11yrs, but many years a tugger.
I guess, it tries to work with so many different bits of kit, drivers and weird specialist drivers that eventually circumstances come together and it can’t cope and goes phuuuuut. :emo:

Put Linux on it if you don't need any specific MS based software.

I’ve turned off updates on my windows 7 laptop.
I know they say you need them for security but I use Norton on it and keep that updated and have decided that I don’t need any more windows updates.

Can that be done on Windows 10?
I keep searching but can't find a setting for it.
Yes, it's not obvious though ... hubby did it for me so I'll have to ask him where the settings are when he gets back later today, I'll let you know.

I run both Linux on old laptops and Windows 10 on my desktop. The update took some time but I have had no issues with it and that is on home built PC. I had carried out a clean install some months ago which always helps with these feature upgrades.

If you want to reinstall W10 I can dig out some links l used to do just that.

Linux may be a good option, as @Gellyneck suggested. I use Linux mint and some windows programs can be run using WINE if you can't do with out them but generally you can find Linux alternatives

I run Win7 on my desktop and various flavours of Android on everything else.
I've bought a 'Chuwi Hi 12' tablet (for use with my music) it's A4 size so I can read it while playing, but it can operate Android AND Windows. Brilliant bit of kit. Very impressed and under £220.

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Our laptops are both the same & about 6months old, so I'm hoping that we don't have any issues, but it really shouldn't boil down to hope should it?

It operates on Android AND Windows. You can switch between them!

Less than £220. BRILLIANT

Is the usb stick bootable? Windows 10 uses UEFI which natively blocks other bootloaders from working IIRC. Linux Mint for example puts it's own bootloader alongside so you get the choice on rebooting. Just realised that I'm talking about a full Linux install on an HDD partition but the usb option should be the same.

Assuming your Win 10 machine is using UEFI you need to ensure the USB drive is formatted as FAT32 and the ISO file is not just a copy of that file but has been properly written to it. You can use Win32 Disk Imager - https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ to do this.
  1. copy the ISO file to the USB drive
  2. start Win32 Disk Imager
  3. select the drive letter of the USB drive
  4. browse to the image file on the USB drive and click it
  5. click write
You then need to turn off Fast Startup in Windows 10.
  1. Win key + X
  2. click Power Options
  3. click Additional power settings
  4. click Choose what the power button does
  5. untick Turn on fast startup
  6. click Save changes
Reboot the laptop, hold down the Shift key whilst it powers up and it should open the UEFI boot screen.
  1. click Use a device
  2. choose USB EFI Drive
Linux Mint should now start in live mode.
Once you've checked it out you can use the install option in Mint to install to your hard drive or continue to use in live mode.
If you install you can go back and turn on fast startup and on subsequent boots you should see Mint Grub bootloader that'll give both Win 10 and Mint options (along with one or two other options).

I got fed up with Microsoft 2 years ago, even their own engineers couldn’t sort out my (their) software problems, bought an iMac and wish I had done it years ago, it just works flawlessly.

@berni109 if you get it back working. Download a free copy of Macrium Reflect. Run it get a usb disk and take a full image of your computer. Then make up a Macrium Rescue disk or Stick. If Msoft screws up it is literally ten minutes to get your computer back to exactly where it was before the screw up. Well it is if you keep all data on a separate data partition. I have done it a number of times and recovered my computer when an update had screwed up, unfortunately I didn't do it for my wife's you can read about the saga elsewhere. Macrium Reflect free and fantastic.

As promised this is how hubby turned off updates on Windows 10 on my laptop:

Right click your Windows icon and click on Run

Type in: gpedit.msc and click Okay

On the right side double left click in turn on:
  • Computer Configuration
  • Administrative Templates
  • Windows Components
  • Windows Update
  • Configure Automatic Updates - this will open the configuration box
Select Disable and click Okay

Close the screen and then restart your computer.

Getting Better
I’m with @Jim Although I don’t have an iMac I have an iPad Pro 12” ... I haven’t looked at a laptop in the last 3yrs, have never had to buy add-ons such as virus software...

It just works, I turn it on and within 30 seconds I’m on here, pages and videos are instant and there so user friendly Sharp’s 80yr old mother has one and does her online shopping and Facetimes us (video call) whilst we’re away in Europe...(y)

I would rather go without then go back to windows laptop....

Think Group Policy Edit doesn't work (by default) in Windows 10 Home which is probably the prevalent version on machines from most retail shops.
I use a free tool on our Win 10 Pro machines that lets you turn update blocking on \ off as required - Windows Update Blocker - https://www.sordum.org/9470/windows-update-blocker-v1-0/#comments
