I just snorted my coffee all over my keyboard...

Powered by Custom Linux Kernel, Microsoft's Azure Sphere OS is a "defense-in-depth" system that comes with a security monitor and offers multiple layers of security

Microsoft has reached for Linux for a security based distribution. There is only two reason I can think for this. They are either not confident in the security of the Windows Kernel or they can't make it small enough/fast enough for this task...

Either way, I am still happy with my Linux desktop, nice fast and secure :p

Off to get some tissues to clean up the coffee. Always makes me laugh when a company scores an own goal like this...

I read on a bit more, and realised there is a 3rd possible reason.

The 3rd component, Azure Sphere Security Service is a cloud-based service that offers device-to-device & device-to-cloud communication through certificate-based authentication to guards every Azure Sphere device. It also takes care of remote software updates.
Linux updates don't take ages and don't require a reboot... For IoT devices reboots every day are not really practical.

My recollection is that Win10 was going to be the final MS Windoze OS.
