Hi. We are Dean, Dawn and scruffy blind Jack Rus called Paddy. We set out from Blighty in Nov 09 to run away from all the awful stuff that is happening there.

We are now in northern Italy having spent all this time getting through the bad weather in France. Things looking good now. A glorious 26 degrees today!

We are driving a twin slide Damon Daybreak with Smart car as toad and have not come across any other American RV's on our trip - all European motorhomes so far!

We now seem to have run out of English people in any form of transport unless you know differently.

Glad to be a part of all this, hope to get many replies. Look forward to hearing from you folks. Bye for now.:thumb:

Hi Dean, Dawn and Paddy,

Interested in your posting as this time next year we hope to be doing what you are now. We are going to USA in May this year to buy our Dayman Daybreak (may end up with another sort but RV all the same), touring USA for six months then shipping it back here to start Europe in March. Have to say, a little sad to hear you havent seen any other American RVs. We have been hearing from people with European ones who say DONT do Europe in an American RV but reading peoples postings here that have done it in an RV and not encountered too many problems is really encouraging!

We are new to MHF too and find it such a great, friendly site. May be see you on the road one day.

Best wishes for happy travels

Stella and James

Have to say it's not as easy as a European motorhome. We're doing on a 7.5T licence and not taken HGV, don't know your circumstances but we undertook this trip without HGV experience and it's not been easy. French and Italian drivers, especially HGV and Coach drivers are mad, impatient and can be somewhat intimidating, but that said stick to the motorways, organise sites within 5 miles of the motorways, email ahead to a site and ask if they can take your size of vehicle - as some can't - and like us you'll be fine.

When you arrive on site the whole place glows with jealousy!!! The living accommodation is SO MUCH better than the European - whilst not as well built the space is amazing, you just can't beat it. We have allowed enough time to stay at sites one week or two weeks at a time and wouldn't recommend trying to move every day or every other day as some of the Europeans do, hope you're in a position to take your time as we are. We believe the reason we've not seen any other American RV's is because the majority do France, Spain, Portugal etc whilst we did France and then Italy and onto Switzerland in what will eventually be an amazing 16 months life experience.

Sounds like you'll have a wonderful time in USA. Several years ago (more than 16) we collected an RV from Atlanta and drove down and dropped off in Florida - fabulous holiday! Good luck, keep in touch with your experiences too!:winky:

Hi, Dean,Dawn & Paddy (oldvid) and Stella & James (oakleyfamily)

We flew to Florida, USA in Oct 2007 with our six month visa's to buy our American RV and car in which to tour the USA & Canada for at least 12 months in order to exempt us from the import duty and tax when we shipped our vehicles back to the UK.

We also purchased a Montana LLC which gave us a zero sales tax. Our first 6 months in the US took us via the west coast to British Columbia, Canada (Apr 2008)

We took approx a further 6 months to cross Canada west to east and returned to the USA (Oct 2008) via Niagara Falls where we obtained our 2nd visa.

We then travelled south via the east coast back to Florida.

In around Feb 2009 we applied for an extension of our visa which if granted would give us a further 6 months until Oct 2009.

However due to family commitments back home we shipped our vehicles home in Aug 2009 and flew back two weeks later to meet the ship as it arrived in Southampton.

We intend to leave the UK for Spain in Sept 2010 but will return to MOT both RV & car, how or what are you doing regarding this 'problem' Stella & James?

If we can offer any advice re the USA just ask either via this thread or a PM.

Mick

Hi, Oldvid, glad you are enjoying your European odyssey. If you want to see some RVs you could always call in at Parc Verger in France - you will see from our website (www.parcverger.com) that we always have some on this site which was originally designed around RVs, but can now take Europeans as well.

Glad to see Mick and Pat will be around again soon, too, as they wrote the first ever report on Parc Verger. Hope you two will also have time to call in on your way through France. You'll see that quite a lot has changed:thumb:

All the best on your journeys.
