enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
Having just purchased a motorhome and insured it fully comp of course, how should insurance be arranged for the kids to use it? they're all over 25 and as the mh is under 3.5 tonnes there are no licence issues.

do other parents find it easier just to add the kids onto your insurance for the odd occasion they would use it (of course if they ARE allowed to use it lol) or do you 'suggest' they arrange their own insurance?

I have had them added to my insurance. A lot of the motorhome insurances are specialist and tend to be NET policies where they do not build up a no claims bonus. The same as used on classic car insurance. I guess it depends on how your insurance is if standard you can get protected no claims and as such have a limited claim allowance before your no claims is affected. My two are excellent drivers and would have no hesitation in paying extra if they had had a claim and it affected my policy cost in the future. I think (like I guess you do) although I bought the van it's just a facility the whole family can use

The youngest doesn't have C1 although I would trust him, the eldest has C1 but no chance unless I wish to see it depart on high revs and possibly a 11 in the road.

SWMBO used to have a C1 prior to age renewal, but no way would she have driven the MH. We did not have to challenge it fortunately, but our medical insurance cover would not recover the vehicle if I was incapacitated if the other driver present,SWMBO, had the licence cover. Given that the need for a second driver could occur over a weekend when insurance offices are shut, we added our sons (both well capable). They never took us up on the offer to use, even for a long weekend, but were there as our insurance for the wheel coming off.
It cost us a lot more over the years. If insurance offices had opened every day (the ones we used), then it’s possible we would have left them off and added them for the emergency purpose.
Everyone’s choices for this are personal and different, just make sure you check the small print of not only the vehicle insurance, but also your health insurance recovery section.

Since 2015.......
After doing over 3 weeks touring in Europe last year, our son (31 next) decided that our A class is a bit too big for his liking:)
And our daughter would not even ask, knowing that the resulting “no way” would be the answer.
;)

The only safe way is to add them to your MH insurance. Their insurance may have something in the fine print or even just a phrase they can use to escape paying out. For example, not covering a vehicle used for living in.

so, it seems as though not everyone wants to share their toys ..... though as they're very expensive and sometimes personal toys, I can understand that.

as for us, we're happy to let the kids get benefit out of something they couldn't afford to buy themselves and not just on the basis that when we've gone whats left is theirs, if that's reduced a bit because of mishaps, then ether they get less, the government gets less or a care home gets less - I would rather see them get some benefit while they're young and can take their children on adventures !!

I will speak to my insurance broker (adrian flux) to see what the cost would be and take it from there but more than happy to receive more info before I make a final decision.

do the toy sharers do it an ad hoc basis or an annual basis?

Hi. We put ours on annual basis, prefer them to be using it than sat on drive. Our children can use any of our cars, all covered for them in case they have problems with their own ones

Unless you sign over the ownership of any vehicle to them or make the other person it's registered user (both on the logbook) - the other person cannot insure that vehicle.

That is the Law.

End of story!

No its not!
Some insurers may not do it but there is nothing in law to stop anyone buying insurance to drive someone else's vehicle. However most companies only offer 12 months insurance but there are a few that sell temporary insurance for up to 28 days.
However I do think its much better just to add them to your policy.
Another thought is that if you ever get stranded and unable to drive for any reason, your offspring might be the best people to help out. This could be a good reason to keep the weight below 3500kg.

The only law bit for insurance is that you must have third party insurance as a minimum

Some insurers may not offer cover for a vehicle you dont own but that does not make it a law

Both my sons (42 and 45) are named drivers on 'my' m/home at minimal extra on the premium and it really pleases me that they and their families can get as much pleasure from it as I do.
It's a vehicle. It's insured.
End of.
