I haven't ridden a bike in 40 years and have just bought a KTM 390 duke. My problem is the cheapest quote I've found is £600, does this seem high or about right given my lack of experience.

Holy moly! That's dear, my Duke 390 insurance is about £115. I think it's 3rd party fire and theft though. At least there's some money in the kitty to get it fixed up when/if I drop it :D2
I'm 49 and last rode a bike in 2005, i've been riding a scooter for the last 3 years but I haven't got any no claims for the bike.

Couple of thoughts.
Get a big disc lock for it, I bought a £65 xena xx14 and it's listed as one that the insurance company likes (classe SRA).

Also I always up the excess because I wouldn't ever claim anyway (they have it back off you thrice fold)

£600 does sound a lot - shop around you should get it at less than half that. I don't think you need tell them you have not ridden for years - just take your time getting used to it again.
Bennetts - Adrian Flux - Carole Nash - Devitt

Sounds like a lot for a little bike.

My 1250 Bandit and my Victory Kingpin cost around £200 each fully comp.

Mrs bigtree paid £105 fully comp. and that's with no no claims as she has that on her 690, might be down to your postcode.

Race van conversion for years
Wow that's expensive, I'd not ridden on the road for 29 years so no NCD (675 Street Triple) & last year Carole Nash was £298.00 this year it had gone up by a lot, so went with Bennetts £252 with same cover & more miles, the cheapest quote was £162 but no breakdown etc etc

Got it down to £280 with Adrian Flux, that is with a £1000 excess. Problem is zero no claims on a bike policy.
