Hi We are off to Spain on Sunday and cant decide whether to go on the M1 or the A1. Last time we went on the M1 and the roadworks were bad.

Can anyone advise which would be the better option?

personally i'd use the A1.....not as busy and many more miles of good dual carraigeway have been added and a lot of nroundabouts removed.

still has roadworks but not as bad as the M1

Agree with all the above.
A1 every time, more pleasant and less boring.
M1 road works (long stretch) in Notts / Derbys can be a real pain.

I prefer A1 every time BUT have been so far down there for the last 2 days and it is closed so far down but can`t remember where as i didn`t go that far down, so recc you check the highways agency website for an update before you go.

Deffo avoid the M1 at the mo, i live right where the roadworks are, they are adding a 4th caridgeway, they've actually compleated the bit from mansfield to south of nottingham but the cones are still present along with the speed limits,

they are just starting the next stretch around leicester, the rate they are going by the time the whole M1 is 4 lanes, it'll be time to start making it 5 lanes.

the A1 is a prety good road as others have said, especialy as most of the roundabouts have been got rid of (if the gonnerby moor roundabout wasnt there 6 years ago i'd have never had my accident)

The A1 is a much more scenic road too, handy for passengers who dont have the traffic and road to concentrate on and keep them occupied,
like others have said, go down the A14/M11 for the quickest route,

wonder if the old McDonalds space ship at the A14 junction is stil for sale, i would have loved to have bought it and turned it into a house.

I'd like to add my vote for the A1. More interesting and the non-motorway bits have laybys some of which are off road and much nicer to stop at than the motorway services. Seems to usually be quicker as well, less traffic and roadworks.:thumb:

A1 for me too.

Much prefer the driving on it now they've taken away those annoying roundabout bottlenecks...

As an ex truck driver of far too many years to mention I would concur and say without a doubt use the A1..A 14..M11..then on the M25 at J27 then round to the Dartford Crossing and M2 down to Dover.:thumb:
So much more to see on the A1 not quite as crowded as the M1..and those lay byes off the road you can get out and stretch your legs..better than lets say any of the services on the M1..it's part of your trip make it worth while and have something to look at on your way South!!:thumb:

Ginny saw a sign today on M6 warning of closures on the A1 on the 9 & 10 April. No details of where, I assumed it will be those road works widening it, but I could be wrong.

Have a good trip & enjoy the sun. :sin:
